Vozvrashcheniye (2003)
Time to eat some crow. I watched this film again in relaxed circumstances, without my preconceptions dictating its unfolding. It is a beautifully and carefully made film. It doesn't matter where the father came from or what he is up to. In life, young boys are often in situations where parents actions remain mysterious. This film is gripping on its own terms and aesthetically consistent.
On first viewing, I missed the detail of the photo the boys find at the very end. Heh, I'm not going to tell.

What an amazing and charming little actor!

Wide Awake (1998)
Sweet, funny & touching, I thought. Joseph Cross is enchanting. (but its not really the way I remember Catholic grade school!)

Witness (1985)
Lucas Haas was never more adorable.

The Yearling (1946)
Just viewed it again after many years. Claude Jarmin is unforgettable and totally real in his part of Jody. The film is a fine blend of gritty realism and tender beauty.

The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet (2013)
An unusual approach to movie storytelling, a bit "wonky" as JosephK says, but it draws you in and is very touching.

800 balas (2002)
I think they could have chopped about 20 minutes from the film without any loss of continuity or mood. The premise is a clever one and makes an involving film. I am in the grip of subtitle fatigue though. As a crude groundling, I would welcome an English track on such films, especially since most of the dialog is given to adult actors.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
I have become more aware of the conceptual flaws in the film, having had time to back off from the parts with strong emotional appeal. Still considered by me to be a 'must watch' if only for Haley's performance.
I think it was definitely a mistake to attempt combining the sensibilities of directors Spielberg and Kubrick. It is a marriage that is too jarring to work.

About a Boy (2002)
A charming black comedy?? I dunno. But it was fun.
My Movie Rating:

Afraid of the Dark (1991)
Very interesting but ultimately heartbreaking. I thought Ben Keyworth did an awesome job of acting.

Arachnophobia (1990)
Aside from any boy movie considerations, I think this was John Goodman's single really funny performance. He had that exterminator character down cold.
