The Butcher Boy (1997)

Captivating performance by the young lead, Eamonn Owens. The movie itself is perfectly scripted, with a grown-up narrator re-living his childhood memories. The gradual development of the young protagonist from neglected kid to insane killer is brilliantly transformed. The story is dark and gloomy, at the same time with a subtle and surreal comic edge, leaving you uneasy but at the same time strangely affected.

The Butterfly Effect (2004)

All the kids are great here. Logan Lerman manages this demanding character with astounding ease. The story is very sophisticated and requires the viewer to concentrate thoroughly and stay alert. The movie has its flaws, but considering the inspiring story and the actually quite succeeded visual transformation, it is a good one. The acting, as I said, is just great. Jesse James is smart in here too.

Casper (1995)

I actually liked Casper. It is nothing sophisticated or durable, but above the average due to its lovely story and the basic idea behind it. You find lots of lousy movies out there that claim to be entertaining, but this one had a simple yet inspiring story. Of course it could have been done better, no doubt. I just thought it was worth seeing.

Les choristes (2004)

Yeah, a fine movie. The boys are wonderful as they turn into singers. I just thought that there could have been stronger emotional implications, something more pervasive. I like it though.

The Client (1994)

Yeah, good one. I enjoyed Brad Renfro's performance, he's doing a tremendously fine job in here. The characters are wonderfully cast. The story is thrilling and carried by emotionally exposing sequences that add a sentimental edge to the movie which puts it above the average thriller.

The Cowboys (1972)

A wonderful western with a simple but strong story. I saw this one a long time ago. I remember the sequence when the boys got drunk around the campfire, when some (was it one or more?) died in a stampede and when The Duke was shot to death. The final scene is very strong, when the boys have the graveyard with the tombstone erected for their chief. Wonderful accomplishment.

Very decent movie with good character portrayals.

Desperation (2006)

I give it an 8 because it is an almost perfect adaptation of the novel - probably because Steven King wrote the screenplay himself. Shane does what his part allows him to do - David Carver as the main protagonist would have needed a bit more depth and emotional complexity as a character to live up to my image of the religious and handsome young lad I encountered in the novel.

East Is East (1999)

This movie becomes the better the longer you watch it. It eventually heads towards a very convincing final climax and features an absolutely believable portrayal of socio-cultural frictions within a multicultural family. The actors do a fine job. Watch out for young Sajid.

Edges of the Lord (2001)

The kids in here do a marvellous job. What struck me was that Haley, despite being the leading character, was almost equalled by Liam Hess and Richard Banel and their genuine performances. The underlying themes are very sophisticated. The setting and the historical context add lots of authenticity to the plot and to the individual accomplishments.

Enemy at the Gates (2001)

A very good movie indeed, strengthened by the ruthless depiction of the real historical circumstances as a background. Gabriel actually had a very important part, thus he was able to transmit his talent and his skills in some outstanding sequences. He kind of shone in the midst of utter destruction and the brutalities of war. His performance was straight; he was even able to attach some sort of emotional edge to the story, and his ultimate fate serves as a symbol for the cruelties of warfare.

Everything That Rises (1998)

Great cast and nicely developed story. Particularly recommended for those like me who like compelling father-son relationships. A classic drama that focuses entirely on one family and the hardships ensuing from an appalling accident. Ryan Merriman does a very convincing job. Watch out for the final rodeo scenes.
