Un ange à la mer (2009)

Emotionally powerful and sometimes difficult to watch ... Martin Nessen is great in the lead role

La Classe de neige (1998)

Disturbingly emotional portrait of adolescent anxiety for a boy dealing with his burgeoning sexuality. Nicolas' unstated but clear attraction for the class 'wiseguy' who takes him under his wing leads to an unraveling of the distinction between truth and falsehood. Ends a little abruptly, I would've preferred more resolution.

D.A.R.Y.L. (1985)

I have to agree with bowser, Barret Oliver is a very fine actor. The first half of the movie is quite good and more interesting than the action-heavy second part.

Dekigokoro (1933)

Enjoyable silent film that provides a glimpse into the life of working-class Tokyo in the 30s. The father and son have great chemistry.

Dennis the Menace (1993)

This is a charming, slapstick film with a lovely Mason Gamble in the lead. A bit of an ode to an Americana that was slipping away by the early 90s. Kids roaming the neighborhood in the summer, middle class towns not yet gutted, gender roles that are humorously mocked or subverted without the patronizing didacticism of 21st century media.

I do wonder why movies of this era felt the need to shoehorn in the robbery subplots? Take that out, give us more exposition of Mr. Wilson getting to know Dennis (apparently he taught him how to tie knots), and this might be a 9/10.

My favorite is the opening scene!

The Desperate Hours (1955)

A quality film noir, with a phenomenal performance from Eyer who shines even alongside the luminaries in the rest of the cast. You may find yourself yelling at the screen as Papa Hilliard bumbles and fumbles his way through escape and rescue efforts, but that's all part of the fun.

Goodbye Christopher Robin (2017)

I was surprised to see the mixed reviews from critics. Well acted, especially by first timer Will Tilston, with gorgeous visuals of the British countryside. A powerful story about the senseless trauma of war and the cruelty of growing up. It also hints at just how much more interesting classic children's characters can be when they exist outside of the imagination-crushing Disney ecosystem.

Hævnen (2010)

I was worried this was veering into cliche "psycho kid" film territory toward the middle, but it redeems itself by the end.

Interesting film about the freedom that can emerge in the chaos of war. Worth a watch especially for the scenes of Billy in the boat!

The House With a Clock in Its Walls (2018)

Owen Vaccaro and Sunny Suljic shine in this joyfully self-aware magic picture based on the 1973 novel.
