War of the Buttons (1994)

I enjoyed this one a lot! That's basically due to the amount of kids and the depiction of the Irish countryside as the main setting. All the actors - without exception - do a perfect job. I especially liked the smouldering tension between Geronimo and Fergus, the two leaders. The way the two gangs clash into each other is both amusing and absorbing. The movie has a tremendous amount of natural, genuine charm to it. It is both sincere and blithe. There ought to be more movies like this one. Entertaining and intriguing at the same time, with some nice twists and unexpected events. The cultural dimension, as the movie takes place in Ireland, is another argument to see it. Friendship and fidelity are some of the main themes. Just to recommend for an entertaining evening.

Wer küßt schon einen Leguan? (2003)

Much much better than I would have expected. Pity I didn't see this earlier. A beautiful movie about a very close friendship between a lonely boy and the soap opera writer next door. Excellent and very moving, great actors.

The Yearling (1946)

Wonderful movie, indeed. Considering its year of production the visual accomplishments are simply amazing. Hard to believe that this colourful und genuine portrayal of a pioneer family is already 60 years old.

3000 Miles to Graceland (2001)

A great and very entertaining movie. It features elements from different genres. It is an action movie, a suspense-packed thriller, almost a gangster comedy and a drama. David Kaye is awesome, his part is very witty and an exact compound of all the elements above. He is sincere and genuine in the serious parts, which is especially obvious throughout the evolving father-son relationship with Kurt Russell's character. Then again he is brilliant in the funny sequences. Just think of the scene in which he shows his guns to Kevin Costner with this firm "Jesse-James-will-kill-ya" glance, or when he reacts so swiftly when the cops arrive at their bungalow in order to have the money hidden and Kurt Russell sitting next to him in front of the TV. That's awesome acting! Still some sequences are exaggeratedly staged, as I don't think a boy of about 10 years would go into the room where his mom is having sex as if it were nothing at all. The cast is great, almost breathtaking. I mean how many movies feature Kevin Costner, Kurt Russell, Christian Slater? The plot is thrilling and has hardly any pauses. The Elvis reference is very inventive and adds a very funny and glitzy element to the story. It's both sincere and entertaining, so... a very good movie!

About a Boy (2002)

First of all I found the inner monologues of the two main characters an inventive and unusual feature. This added to the comedy aspect and caused hilarious scenes. In addition it added depth to the characters themselves, which is something comedies of this sort normally lack. To put this into the right perspective, some of the thoughts we are presented with are rather artificial, but still, the approach itself and its effect on the storyline is something that needs to be appreciated.

The plot is modest, but has some unexpected strengths. I was frankly surprised about the mix of realistic challenges of life and the comedy aspects, as I thought the latter would be the movie's emphases. However, they were in balance - the movie dealt with real problems many members of the audience are probably able to relate to. The comedy was sometimes too artificial, but it seems to have worked in this case.

Hugh Grant and his attitude towards life is one major theme, Nicholas Hoult's portrayal of Marcus the second prevailing one. The movie then focuses on these two characters and makes them influence each other - which leads to interesting changes and challenges for the protagonists, and that is what puts this movie above the ordinary.

I generally do not like Hugh Grant's humor. Here again he seems a bit uncomfortable as Nicholas' partner. He kind of aces his comedy parts with his very own sense of entertaining the audience, but as soon as it comes to difficult scenes demanding more than superficial acting, he seems - yeah, a bit uneasy.

Nonetheless, considering the general lack of sophistication comedies such as these aim at, this movie is an improvement. The father-son relationship which is subtly addressed lacks real emotional depth - again something which accrues from the movie's arrangement as a comedy - but is decent to watch and carries some messages.

I personally like Hugh Grant's philosophy of life - something many male singles will be able to relate to somehow - and the way he justifies his attitude. The changes which happen after he has encountered Marcus make this movie worthwhile, as they entail a character development and some messages of life.

'No man is an island' - Marcus' last words and his face as the closing scene made me appreciate this movie as a whole, because it really made its way off the corny trash and has managed to mix comedy with sincere issues of life - something hard to find.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1985)

The most complete adaptation of the original artwork by Mark Twain. The movie sticks to the novel painstakingly (as Twain would have said). There's only the scene with the houseboat missing I think, where Jim realized the dead corpse inside being Huck's father, and also the scene where the duke and the king fool the family by pretending being the English relatives of a dead man is left out, if my memory doesn't fool me. The two boys, especially Patrick Day as Huck, are doing a wonderful job as they revive two of the most famous characters in literature.

Air Bud (1997)

Yeah, to be honest, I did like this one. Why? Because it is the story of a lonesome boy who finds a friend. It is a schmaltzy theme, especially when Kevin tries to abandon Buddy and starts to cry, but hey, he as an actor gives his best and almost succeeds. So, it's the themes and Kevin Zegers that made it worth watching for me.

Angels in the Outfield (1995)

Yeah, the archetype of a simple but inspirational movie. The very end when the entire crowd in the stadium gets up and the people raise their hands gives me a chill whenever I see it. That's just brilliant. Joseph is wonderful as the lonely and sad kid who has so far been disappointed by anyone and anything in his life. The way he interacts with Danny Glover and tries to make him believe in the magic and the angels is funny and exhilarant. A very nice family movie with - I concede - a rather corny happy end. But hey, it doesn't really matter, the movie retains its basic quality by the good acting and the inspirational themes.

Blank Check (1994)

The story was entirely surreal, but nonetheless great! What anyone who rates and reviews movies ought to bear in mind is what the respective movie aims at. It's the same with "First Kid", which follows a similar pattern. Certain movies - like this one here - just aim at plain and comical nonsense. Such movies can't be rated from the point of view of a hypercritical reviewer. Of course these movies lack quality, lack a sophisticated storyline, very often lack first-class acting, but if they do fulfil their primary premise - that's okay. I don't have this movie here on my list of all-time favorites, but I still thought it was funny, had some very enjoyable sequences and made a good story. Brian Bonsall is a smart actor anyway.

A Bronx Tale (1993)

This is a very strong movie. It has a convincing storyline and all the actors are simply wonderfully cast. Robert DeNiro's part is well-developed. The arising conflict with his son and the decent obligation he feels towards his son's moral alignment is both pervasive and very genuinely staged. I liked the dialogues as well as the development of the story, the subtle depiction of the setting (both time and location) and the very convincing character portrayal, as I said before. The story serves as a symbol for the moral tension and the reckless decisions people who live in a certain environment have to make in order to find their place in the world. Wonderfully transformed, a fine depiction of social circumstances and influences affecting individual conviction.
