Spellbound (2002)

There's also been a fictional film treatment of this contest: Akeelah and the Bee, which is predictable but well-constructed and winning.

Stand by Me (1986)

This film is dear to the hearts of many and I can see why. It's hard to go far wrong with River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton and a story of boyhood friendships and adventures and of nostalgia for times past. That said, a few things about it rang false to me. For instance, River Phoenix's character is implausibly emotionally mature for a twelve-year-old, and like clockwork, three of the main four have a crisis and break down crying, then are consoled -- except for the fat kid, who's just there for comic relief. I thought the Argentinian short film Raw Love did a much better job with the themes of deep friendship, unspoken love and the losses of growing up. Mind you, I didn't much care for Reiner's hugely popular The Princess Bride either, so maybe I'm loopy!

Stand Clear of the Closing Doors (2013)

Wow, what a movie! Piercingly realistic, knocks The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time into a cocked hat. Would make a good companion film to Mosquita y Mari, Raising Victor Vargas, On the Outs, Lukas and the Aspies, La Leyenda Negra and Real Women Have Curves. Jesus Sanchez-Velez, the fine actor playing the thirteen-year-old autistic protagonist, is autistic himself.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

Good fun, though it can't hold a candle to the original trilogy. Jake Lloyd's acting is a bit wooden, but he's much preferable to Hayden Christensen! People who saw this one in childhood, which is a lot of people by now, will have a sentimental attachment to it, and it really is much more of a kid-aimed movie than the others.

Station Jim (2001)

Thomas Sangster, Victorian railways and a dog are surefire ingredients for an enjoyable watch.

Stig of the Dump (2002)

Adaptation of Clive King's classic novel. Surprisingly good, compares quite well with the 1981 Thames Television version with Grant Warnock, which at the end of the day is the better of the two. Some fine acting from Thomas Sangster here, however.
