It does one thing perfect. It gives you the nostalgia of friendship as a kid.

This film is dear to the hearts of many and I can see why. It's hard to go far wrong with River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton and a story of boyhood friendships and adventures and of nostalgia for times past. That said, a few things about it rang false to me. For instance, River Phoenix's character is implausibly emotionally mature for a twelve-year-old, and like clockwork, three of the main four have a crisis and break down crying, then are consoled -- except for the fat kid, who's just there for comic relief. I thought the Argentinian short film Raw Love did a much better job with the themes of deep friendship, unspoken love and the losses of growing up. Mind you, I didn't much care for Reiner's hugely popular The Princess Bride either, so maybe I'm loopy!
