Frailty (2001)

It lost a point from me for the "twist" at the end. I might not go as far as cal-q-l8 but it definitely left a bad impression, a shame because the performances were all top notch.

Le gamin au vélo (2011)

Thomas Doret is convincing as a boy coping with sudden abandonment by his father. He is taken in on a whim by a local hairdresser, but starts to fall in with the charismatic leader of a group of trouble-causing teens. I did not fully understand what led the man to leave his son. This is an enjoyable film for a Sunday afternoon, with some interesting scenes but overall not the most memorable. Doret's performance stood out as the most realistic.

The Grinder (2015-2016)

Better-than-average single-cam sitcom that is populated by fun characters but requires a fair amount of suspension of disbelief. Connor Kalopsis is appealing as a boy enamored with his famous uncle.

Having You (2013)

I wish there was more screen time for Isaac. It's a fine dinner time flick.

The Hideaways (1973)

A mostly faithful adaptation of the beloved novel, Hideaways is a 70s film through-and-through, with cheesy bumper music and B-roll of a New York whose grit was starting to show through the glitz and glamor. Redhead J. Doran puts in a satisfactory if not revelatory performance as Jamie. Ingrid Bergman steals the show with a campy performance as Mrs. Frankweiler.

Hugo (2011)

Based on the 500+ page graphic novel, this movie clocks in at 2.5 hours, though the central mystery is resolved long before that. It seems that once a director becomes enough of a "name," the studios are hesitant to tell him to cut down the running time.

Both leads come from rather posh backgrounds which I think explains why some see their acting as artificial -- they have a lot of training, so their performances lack a certain authentic spark. Butterfield has a striking appearance that always commands attention. Moretz is a minor talent who even in 2011 was clearly being cultivated as a future Hollywood star.

The story itself is interesting and serves as a solid introduction to film history for children.

The Innocents (1961)

Chilling film with a remarkable performance from Martin Stephens, and a script which Truman Capote helps elevate to a unique retelling of this story. It does drag a bit towards the end and more screen time with Stephens would have been nice.

La otra familia (2011)

I was surprised to see a Mexican film addressing these issues in such an open and honest manner. The main plot was engaging, but there were some subplots that felt a bit extraneous. Sometimes the action was hard to follow. Bruno Loza is very cute as Hendrix.

Feel good film with a predictable plot, but rewarding if you're willing to suspend disbelief.

The Ryan White Story (1989)

it's TV movie quality, but the educational aspect and strong performances from Haas and Sarah Jessica Parker elevate my rating a star. I like that they acknowledge the homophobic dynamics of the debate. should be shown in school health classes

Witness (1985)

Wonderful cinematography. Unfortunately Lukas Haas is not present for a large duration toward the middle of the film. The ending felt a little rushed like there was still more story to tell. But, I enjoyed and would watch again.
