Cachorro (2004)

A bit like Breakfast with Scot but better: more thoughtful, plays it less safe. Recommended!

Carrie's War (1974)

Solid if slightly flat BBC adaptation of the Nina Bawden novel, in my view her best after Granny the Pag. Andrew Tinney's Nick perhaps lacks some of the subtleties of the book character but the Tim Coward gets Albert Sandwich just right -- serious but not priggish -- and Nicholas Symons makes an impression at the end as Carrie's son.

The Cement Garden (1993)

Different and well done. However, the 2016 Latvian film Mellow Mud tells a similar story and does it better.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

Personally I prefer the 1971 version with Peter Ostrum, but the darker tone of this one is probably more in keeping with Roald Dahl's body of work. He wrote some seriously creepy short stories for adults and there's something of the same sensibility in his beloved children's novels.

The Childhood of a Leader (2015)

Atmospheric, good-looking film streaked with psychoanalysis. Overly ambitious but has some fine set pieces. Tom Sweet gives a good performance, doing his best with a rather flatly written character.

Chocky (1984)

Despite some stilted dialogue, the first season in particular is pretty good. Andrew Ellams is an engaging lead.
