Escape Into Night (1972)
Catherine Storr's story is forever immortalised in this TV adaptation. And although it's always sad when the original colour footage of a TV series is destroyed, it has to be said that the black-and-white telerecording does give the series a timeless quality. Steven Jones is just wonderful as the pajama-clad Mark.

Eu Me Lembro (2005)
An extraordinary multi-award-winning masterpiece about the childhood, youth and young manhood of young Guiga growing up in Salvador in Brazil. Delivered with a kind of total candour and lucidity, to create a vivid portrait of the protagonist and his world, as he grows into an adult strongly influenced by the countercultural currents of the 1970s. One of the finest ever films in the coming-of-age genre. Coming from Brazil, this film also displays a frank recognition of juvenile sexuality.

Európa messze van (1995)

Évolution (2015)
A fascinating, multi-layered film, very eerie, with some stunning underwater cinematography. The more I view this film, the more I love it.

Fahrenheit 451 (1966)
Despite its flaws, this is still a powerful and exceptional film.

The Famous Five (1978-1979)
Surprisingly charming version of Blyton's stories re-set in the 1970s. The whole thing was done better by the 90s series. This series is still enjoyable, though, and the theme tune always evokes a wave of nostalgia for me.
My Movie Rating:

The Famous Five (1995-1997)
Enid Blyton's oeuvre is hardly great literature, but as an adaptation of her stories it is hard to imagine this production being bettered (hence the 10 stars). Paul Child is particularly personable, and there are some great boys making appearances here and there in the series. Sniffer (Lee Turnbull) is brilliant in the episode "Five Go to Mystery Moor" - the handkerchief always cracks me up (you'll have to view the episode to see what I mean!).

Father (2017)
Quite good. I haven't a clue what it means!
My Movie Rating:

A Feast at Midnight (1994)
A rather slight affair, a little overlong, with some rather thin characters. The sort of film one watches once and then will never bother viewing again. Perhaps I'm being too harsh. It has some good moments of wry humour, and is at least partially redeemed by Freddie Findlay being a good actor.
My Movie Rating:

Festningen (2011)

Fortress (1985)
A riveting thriller, but with a moral depth unusual for this genre. Stars the very handsome Sean Garlick. Highly recommended.

Found (2012)
Much more interesting than I thought it was going to be, the strength of the movie lies in its never deviating from Marty's point of view, so that we identify completely with the character and how he sees the world.
My Movie Rating:

Frankenweenie (1984)
Quite absurdly pleasing short film. A must-see!

Free Willy (1993)
My Movie Rating:

Friends (2012)
Like so many short films, this feels too much like a mere fragment to leave any lasting impression. The boys are quite good. I've seen worse.
My Movie Rating:

Garra Charrúa (2012)
Charming and educational. The Uruguayans clearly have a superior culture.

Genç pehlivanlar (2016)
A superb documentary about an amazing group of athletes.

The Genesis Children (1972)
I'm surprised at the negative reviews of this movie. Some people have no aesthetic taste at all. The beautiful Italian countryside, gorgeous music, breathtaking cinematography, a portrait of life in Italy before the ravages of globalisation reduced everywhere to drab capitalist uniformity, and a philosophical storyline which ponders how man lost Eden... An absolutely unique film that could not have been made at any other time than the precise time it was produced. A total classic which repays multiple viewings.

La Gloire de mon père (1990)

The Golden Compass (2007)
I was bored to tears by this movie. I had to struggle to avoid falling into unconsciousness followed swiftly be coma and then rigor mortis. But then (full disclosure) I read the whole trilogy many years ago and afterwards felt that I had rather wasted my time. The elements of the story are so clumsily and almost thoughtlessly put together (daemons are supposed to be our souls, or something. Are they physical? Do they defecate?). I find it hard to believe that Pullman's novel would have been as celebrated as it was if it were not billed as some sort of atheist propaganda. Certainly the 'Magisterium' - an obvious stand-in for the Catholic Church - is presented in a sort of simplistic, historically-illiterate manner as the root of all evil. There is one point in the first book of the trilogy when the separation of a person from their daemon is presented as the equivalent to circumcision (another sort of cutting) - and at this point I thought 'maybe the novel is about to get interesting'. Except that the point is left hanging in the air and is undeveloped (and, in any case, Christianity, in contrast to the other Abrahamic faiths, abolished circumcision - another example of the author's overall clumsiness with his ideas). So there really isn't much to grab one's interest. The prevalence of CGI in this movie is, I suppose, inevitable, but I always find CGI annoying.
