Synopsis
Diego's first day of class is going to be tough. He's a Uruguayan boy who has just arrived in Barcelona. When Andrés, the class bully, mocks him in front of his classmates, Diego challenges him to a football match. But he will only be able to defeat Andrés if he believes in the strength of his "Garra Charrúa".
Notes
- The Charrúa were a semi-nomadic Amerindian people who were indigenous to Uruguay before the coming of the Spanish invaders, the latter not only taking the Charrúa land but also, in 1831, organizing a campaign of genocide aimed at wiping them out entirely. The expression "Garra Charrúa" (Charrúan tenacity, pronounced roughly GA-ra cha-ROO-a, but with a slight 'rolling' on the double-'R's) is used by contemporary Uruguayans (many of whom have Charrúa people among their ancestors) to refer to situations in which they display bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. In order to emphasize their "garra Charrúa", the Uruguay national football team is nicknamed "Los Charrúas".
