Les amitiés particulières (1964)

it's a pretty good film, but i think it can not stand up to 'the fire that burns' (known in french as 'la ville dont le prince est un enfant', translated into 'the land whose king is a child', a quotation from ecclesiastes) ; this only reflects the superiority of montherlant's writings (the drama, and a novel with a similar plot, 'les garçons', a truly beautiful novel ; as everyone knows, the drama and the novel are largely autobiographical) over roger peyrefitte's book, also autobiographical, 'les amitiés particulières', worth a read though ;

didier haudepin's performance is truly moving however, so one can only be amused by the fact that he played the character of andré sevrais in the first stage production of 'la ville dont le prince est un enfant' in 1967 ; the atmosphere of catholic boys schools between the wars is magnificently recreated ; sadly, the actor who plays georges de sarre, the main character, is less convincing ; the emotional charge of the film is somewhat weakened, in my sense, by the fact that it is not always credible (i'm thinking of the overdone platonic aspect of the relationship, as a matter of fact, such relationships in catholic boys schools were rarely chast ; and, watch out here's a spoiler, i'm thinking too of mottier's suicide) ; for those reasons, the movie (as the book itself) is less powerful than montherlant's works, even though it's certainly worth a watch

Idi i smotri (1985)

Rather uneven movie ; the first part (before the attack of the village) is either boring or makes the viewer feel uneasy ; the last part however and the end are still quite powerful, but on the whole, the film does not stand up to other great Russian 'war films' (if that's what they really are) such as Ivan's Childhood.
