Sidekicks (1992)
Haven't seen this one for ages. Young Jonathan Brandis was a very talented actor, and I'll always remember him for his roles in IT and The Neverending Story II, both of which I loved as a kid. I could easy relate to him in Sidekicks, having had the same respiratory problems. The story itself is a kind of Karate Kid revisited.
My Movie Rating:Signs (2002)
I personally like it. This is mainly due to the fine cast and the solid performance by Rory Culkin. I'm not a fan of Mr. Shyamalan, but this one was done properly. The suspense was intact for a long time throughout the movie - you did not know what to expect nor what would happen. Once the alien was visible, the suspense was replaced by solid action and a nice climax at the very end.
Good job.
My Movie Rating:Silent Fall (1994)
Surprisingly good movie! Set up as a classical crime story, with lots of twists in the end and a very convincing autistic boy. I didn't quite come to terms with the voice-imitation thing - this seemed so very unrealistic, at least in the dubbed German version, in which they used the voices of the adult actors when the boy imitated their voices. I strongly doubt that a high-pitched boy-voice could imitate the deep adult sounds so easily. I wonder if this is the same with the original English audio? Richard Dreyfuss was very good as the disillusioned child psychologist. Worthwile experience, I was never tempted to zap away.
My Movie Rating:Simon Birch (1998)
Nice, funny and moving.
My Movie Rating:The Sixth Sense (1999)
Yeah, this one is definitely a "must watch". The movie has gained some sort of legendary status already. It is the first movie in which Haley Joel Osment was able to present his acting skills to a broad public that applauded him frenetically. He is sheer brilliant, no doubt. In my eyes, Haley leads the table of outstanding all-time performances by any young actor, followed scantly by Elijah Wood.
This movie has suspense, it has frightening sequences, it has mystery and thrilling crime aspects, all of these superbly converging on Haley Joels' character. Congrats!
Sleepers (1996)
A classic. The story is complex and very sophisticated. The cast is sheer brilliant and hardly to surpass. Here we get first-class entertainment in combination with suspense and a variety of themes that are fairly well known to anyone, just as revenge, justice, murder, abuse, atonement etc. The kids do a fine job, really. They add tremendous depth to the deeds and to the behaviour of the grown ups. Their genuine and sure-handed performances grant the movie a considerable amount of emotional recognition and chain anyone who soaks up and identifies with the storyline and the characters. The very end closes the circle and makes us aware of how quickly our lives can fall apart. Thrilling and suspense is guaranteed. Very recommendable.
Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
My Movie Rating:Sling Blade (1996)
Awesome character portrayal. Lucas Black has a substantial part and shines indeed as the poor and lonely kid from the boondocks who yearns for a happy life and fatherly guidance. The focus is strongly on his relationship with Karl and how both of them try to make the best out of their miserable lives. Shot in Arkansas.
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
My Movie Rating:Son of Rambow (2007)
Absolutely brilliant!
Song for a Raggy Boy (2003)
One of the best movies I've seen in years. Watch it, watch it, watch it! The characters are so strong and the story will break your heart. I don't feel ashamed to admit that I cried at the end. One of the most harrowing real-life dramas of all time.
The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)
I enjoyed Freddie's double performance. The ending was very cheesy, but I guess you can't get around feel-good endings in such family movies.
My Movie Rating:Spud (2010)
Very good movie.
My Movie Rating:Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams (2002)
Yeah, I couldn't make much of it too.
My Movie Rating:The Squid and the Whale (2005)
Owen Kline is amazing, but that's that.
My Movie Rating:Stand by Me (1986)
Well, what can I say? This is probably the most classic coming of age story of all times. All the actors act magnificently, especially the two main characters. Magic and nostalgia as never experienced before. Unique, simply unique. A look into the heart and soul of the youth in the 50s. Thanks to Stephen King for the original artwork.
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994)
I didn't like the Next Generation series at all. Never watched it regularly. I'm much more into the classic series with Captain Kirk, Bones McCoy and the other legends. They were my heroes when I was about ten.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Okay, I have to state that I have never been a fan of this "Episode I, II, III"-hype. I for my part stick to the original three movies, which will always be Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi, and not episode IV,V,VI or whatever.
This one here is nothing special to my mind. It has not much more than exaggerated special effects and an overuse of visual input. Jake Lloyd though, he was very good and aced his role.
My Movie Rating:Stepmom (1998)
This movie has a very sincere message and tells the story of how a family deals with a deadly illness. The two main female characters deliver outstanding performances. Watch out for this one if you like emotional and touching family stories with a deeper meaning to life and love. Liam is very good in here too.
My Movie Rating:Stepsister from Planet Weird (2000)
I saw this movie quite some time ago. It was not very sophisticated. Even the acting was nothing but average. Myles Jeffrey is good though.
