The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008)

I am a patriot. I would even call myself a nationalist, by which, however, I don't mean that I have the slightest sympathy for the mass murder and destruction the Nazis brought over Europe. What I do mean is that I love my home, my country, and I do have respect for the ordinary Nazi soldiers who did not participate in the Holocaust, were mostly unaware of what was going on and thinking that they were sacrificing their youth and their lives for a just cause, deceived by a radical regime that preyed upon their loyalty and patriotic zeal - like my grandpa, who fought in Stalingrad. I reject the notion of all soldiers and all Nazi supporters being guilty of mass murder. While being fully aware of the horrid crimes my ancestors committed, I still try to see them as human beings, with all their good and bad traits.

This movie, however, makes me once again aware of the extent of the crimes committed in the name of my ancestors. I found myself wondering "why". Why on Earth did this have to happen. Why on Earth did those responsible not only commit these crimes, but also impose eternal guilt on us, on posterity. What made them discard their humanity and allow their hearts and souls being filled with the darkest evil that had come directly from the gates of hell.

This movie tells a brave story, a story that must be told ever and ever again. Seeing all of this through the eyes of a child makes it even more painful to watch and reveals the whole scope of the crimes the Nazis committed.

Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

Outstanding performances. Inspiring story. Genuine themes. Perfect adaptation of a timeless children's book. Truly one of the best I've seen this year.

A Bronx Tale (1993)

This is a very strong movie. It has a convincing storyline and all the actors are simply wonderfully cast. Robert DeNiro's part is well-developed. The arising conflict with his son and the decent obligation he feels towards his son's moral alignment is both pervasive and very genuinely staged. I liked the dialogues as well as the development of the story, the subtle depiction of the setting (both time and location) and the very convincing character portrayal, as I said before. The story serves as a symbol for the moral tension and the reckless decisions people who live in a certain environment have to make in order to find their place in the world. Wonderfully transformed, a fine depiction of social circumstances and influences affecting individual conviction.

Wonderful performance by Albert Finney. About the art of teaching and the relationship between teachers and their students.

Bushwhacked (1995)

Call me modest, but I did like this one :) It was funny and very entertaining to watch. The kids were great and I couldn't help laughing at certain sequences. Wonderful story and funny transformation with some very witty dialogues.

The Butcher Boy (1997)

Captivating performance by the young lead, Eamonn Owens. The movie itself is perfectly scripted, with a grown-up narrator re-living his childhood memories. The gradual development of the young protagonist from neglected kid to insane killer is brilliantly transformed. The story is dark and gloomy, at the same time with a subtle and surreal comic edge, leaving you uneasy but at the same time strangely affected.

The Butterfly Effect (2004)

All the kids are great here. Logan Lerman manages this demanding character with astounding ease. The story is very sophisticated and requires the viewer to concentrate thoroughly and stay alert. The movie has its flaws, but considering the inspiring story and the actually quite succeeded visual transformation, it is a good one. The acting, as I said, is just great. Jesse James is smart in here too.

Cachorro (2004)

I got to give this one a 10. I was utterly moved by some scenes, which happens rarely enough, and despite my initial reluctance to watch this explicitly gay movie I was absolutely impressed by the warmth and strength of the main protagonists. Absolutely brilliant portrayal of intergenerational love between a young boy and his gay uncle. The final 15 minutes make this movie a 10 for me. Awesome flick.

Casper (1995)

I actually liked Casper. It is nothing sophisticated or durable, but above the average due to its lovely story and the basic idea behind it. You find lots of lousy movies out there that claim to be entertaining, but this one had a simple yet inspiring story. Of course it could have been done better, no doubt. I just thought it was worth seeing.

Casper: A Spirited Beginning (1997)

Yeah, the plot is indeed rather lousy. Still, Brendon did a good job. If I remember correctly, it was him who made me watch through to the end. He was vivid and pleasant and convinced me with his genuine performance.
