Emil und die Detektive (1931)

A classic of early children's cinema. Benjamin Britten, who wrote a lot of wonderful music for boys' voices, said that this was "the most perfect and satisfying" film he had ever seen.

El Espinazo del Diablo (2001)

Cracking film that Guillermo del Toro has called his most personal work, and that must surely be his best, much better than e.g. The Shape of Water, which has some great visuals and one great character but suffers from simplistic and overly obvious plotting. Here, Fernando Tielve makes an appealing lead. He had never been in a film before and only auditioned to be an extra, but del Toro obviously got other ideas. Unlike many coming-of-age pictures set in orphanages and children's homes, this one depicts a place that, apart from the obvious bad apple, is OK by the standards of the time and run by decent people. It's also a bit unusual in that the protagonist is not a heavily-bullied shy outcast but quite bold and socially savvy.

Fanny och Alexander (1982)

In my view Ingmar Bergman's greatest films, which means some of the greatest films ever made, are the medieval dramas The Seventh Seal and The Virgin Spring; the 'Silence of God trilogy': Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light and The Silence; Wild Strawberries; and this one.

Geluiden voor Mazin (2013)

Respectful, thoughtful, even-handed documentary, praised for its accurate representation of what it sounds like to have a cochlear implant. Also see Lindsay Anderson's documentary short Thursday's Children, a look at young deaf children in a school where, this being 1954, oralism reigns.

The Innocents (1961)

Cripes what a creepy chiller, and what amazing cinematography from Freddie Francis. It manages not to be a piece of dated Freudianism: the themes are just as topical now. Martin Stephens is great.

Ivanovo detstvo (1962)

In my view Tarkovsky's best after Andrei Rublev. If Soviet depictions of the Second World War are of interest, also take a look at at The Ballad of a Soldier, The Cranes are Flying and Commissar, each of which is excellent in its own way.

Kes (1969)

One of Ken Loach's first films, and his best -- Cathy Come Home and Sorry We Missed You are also excellent, but Land and Freedom, for instance, is not a patch on Juan Antonio Bardem's Seven Days in January: in fact, it could aptly have been titled Homage to Catalonia: The Soap. Kes is part of the 'kitchen sink realism' movement in British film that produced such fine movies as A Taste of Honey, A Kind of Loving, This Sporting Life, The Leather Boys, Billy Liar and The L-Shaped Room, but is also something special by itself.

By the late great Abbas Kiarostami, who made quite a few other excellent fictional films featuring boy actors, including The Experience, A Wedding Suit, The Breaktime and The Bread and Alley, as well as the superb documentary Homework.
