Either I'm used to modern film making or this isn't the 'golden oldie' others believe. The scenes were sketchy and abruptly joined though the DVD I saw wasn't remastered. I understand the director's difficulty in making such a film in such dreadful circumstances but the overall effect was still patchy. Edmund Moeschke was beautiful in his shorts and did a good job considering he was not a professional actor. I must presume he was a German boy from his surname so was he dubbed into Italian? A good storyline but insufficient development of the characters marred the production. I give the film 5 for Edmund.

The third part of a trilogy. The first two, likewise wonderful films, are Roma città aperta and Paisà. Rossellini went on to direct one more Second World War film, Il generale Della Rovere, starring Vittorio De Sica and also very good.
