8 / 10 8 / 10 Perhaps not quite as good as the 1987 TV miniseries, but a superb film realisation nonetheless. One pleasing thing about this movie is that Gerald (Eugene Simon) goes practically feral by the end - wearing just a pair of shorts and covered in a layer of dirt.

My Movie Rating: 8 / 10 9 / 10 8 / 10 8 / 10 I read the book many years ago and I also remember the TV series in 1987 with a lot of fondness, so I was expecting a lot from this movie. I found it to be a little disapointing. Rather too much slapstick style comedy for my taste, and the music soundtrack was very noisy and intrusive. It's not bad though, and I'm sure newbies to this story will find it enchanting. Eugene Simon does very well as the young Gerald Durrell in what is essentially the central character in this rather too short version.
