I actually liked this version of Oliver Twist better than the Mark Lester version. Barney Clark and Harry Eden were fabulous as Oliver and Dodger. Both versions were great but I liked this one better.

Ridiculous effort for this story.

I saw only four or five boys in the 'den' of Fagan.

Stay with the classic musical from 1968.

Very well done I thought. By now I know this story inside out. It's probably second only to A Christmas Carol as Dicken's most well known story. But it still kept me interested. I thought Barney Clark did an excellent job. The charcter of Oliver Twist is the least interesting character in the whole story. He's good-hearted and sympathetic and is basically there to react to the more interesting characters in the story, and Clark did this very well. But the best reason to see this movie is for Ben Kingsley as Fagin. Was he even nominated for this role? If not, he should have been, and he should have won. It's great to see a classic like this get a nice, big budget treatment by a talented director. Bring on Great Expectations next! :)

Good movie. The visuals are great, living up to Dickens' contemporary perception of London. Barney Clark is doing well, but I somehow didn't feel as emotionally attached to him as I'd have expected. His character could have been made deeper and more vivid; he just seems too depressed and silent. Maybe this is done deliberately. The rest of the movie is just great, featuring a gloomy and dark atmosphere and a nice cast.
