Pinocchio (2008)
Surprisingly crap. One is always aware that Robbie Kay is 'acting' - he's completely unnatural. The dialogue is in the artificial modern style that has become the fashion with British films and TV programmes generally. Perhaps it is *not* so surprising that a British version of Pinocchio made in the 21st century would be crap.

Pit Pony (1999-2000)
I've only seen Season 1 of this series. Very little about pit ponies in it. Quite pleasant after the first few episodes, once the series has got all the pseudo-Celtic cliches out of its system. Willie is a little mature beyond his years. I loved Spider, though. I think he ought to have had a separate spin-off series, 'The Adventures of Spider'.

Planta 4ª (2003)
The Radetzky March has never been put to better use!

The Pledge for Mister Bunny (2013)
I absolutely adore this short film!

Po strnisti bos (2017)
Gorgeous, gentle comedy. Also see "The Elementary School", to which this film was the prequel.

Poil de carotte (1932)
Unmissable performances. A masterpiece.

Pojedeme k mori (2014)
Entertaining and highly watchable piece of fluff - though I did sometimes feel that I was viewing something like an extended Youtube video, which was slightly irritating.

Pokhoronite menya za plintusom (2009)
Utterly superb film based on Pavel Sanaev's humorous novel. Sasha Drobitko is just STUNNING as the little boy having to cope with his completely unbalanced and controlling grandmother (who is also very well acted). He really is an outstandingly good actor. A modern classic of Russian cinema. Unmissable.

The Possession of Joel Delaney (1972)

Presence of Mind (1999)
Rather magnificent. Nilo Mur makes a wonderful Miles - and he speaks English very well (I half expected his dialogue to be dubbed, but this is very clearly not the case).

Promis... juré! (1987)
Charming, unmissable comedy about the life of a French boy (wonderfully played by Michel Morin) and his interaction with his family and the other characters in his town during the Second World War and the Liberation.

The Race (2009)

Rascals and Robbers (1982)
A charming homage to Twain's characters. Patrick Creadon and Anthony Michael Hall are both excellent.

Reg'lar Fellers (1941)
A rather poor movie with a messy, unconvincing plot, and paper-thin characters. The only good thing about this movie is Carl Switzer (Alfalfa) singing "The Last Rose of Summer", as only he could. Indeed, it's probably worth seeing the film just for that. This was Switzer's first film after leaving the 'Our Gang' series, and really his genius deserved so much better than the terribly poor script he was handed here.

Respublika SHKID (1966)
This is a completely wonderful movie. I'm just in awe at how good it is. The story of the institute for juvenile offenders and homeless boys is told in a sequence of segments, with wonderful and believable characters, such as the one-eyed 'Mummy' (Aleksandr Kavalerov). It is an anti-authoritarian movie, as well (made at the tail end of 'The Thaw', roughly 1954-66), suggesting that the only way of making useful citizens out of people is to allow them to govern themselves. To give the movie anything less than 10 out of 10 would seem churlish. Also highly recommended, from the same period of Soviet cinema, "Welcome, or No Trespassing" (1964), with a similarly anti-authoritarian message.

Revolution (1985)
The version I saw was the Director's ('Revisited') Cut. The actors are great, Sid Owen is a very handsome lad, the battle scenes are excellent, the scenery is gritty, dirty and realistic, and as a story of love between a father and son it is quite moving. Donald Sutherland's character is quite nuanced and his relationship with his drummer boy Ben does something to counter-balance the character of Lord Darling. On the negative side, it felt downright peculiar seeing the not-so-attractive Dexter Fletcher replace Owen as Ned in the last half hour of the movie. But overall, this movie is very much worth seeing.

Robin Hood Junior (1975)
Exuberantly silly.

Roman Mysteries (2007-2008)
Okay, I've only just begun watching this, but... A Jewish father and son are invited to dine at the home of a Gentile and the host serves them sea-snails - can you imagine any behaviour more insulting to a Jewish guest?!! The main girl character in the piece I find a little irritating. She has very 21st century attitudes as well - plenty of handwringing about slaves, and wanting to treat a slave as a friend. Yeah, right. Oh, and apparently people bathe (and swim) fully clothed as well. Basically, in terms of historical verisimilitude, it's sheer nonsense. Having said that... It is entertaining, in a funny way, and Harry Stott and Eli Machover are very likable as Lupus and Jonathan respectively. Just think of it as 21st century kids in Roman togs.

Ruined (2013)
What EXACTLY was the point of this film? Were we supposed to CHEER when Mr. Lewis repeatedly punches the boy's father in the face? If I were as much a CYNIC as my illustrious ancient namesake I might suspect that the whole purpose of this movie was to present the 'welfare services', the law and the judiciary in a benign light. None of it was very believable. And the whole thing is capped by some sanctimonious tripe about the grown-up son 'forgiving' his father. Lord, give me strength! The 'acting' oscillated between lamentable and cringe-worthy, before settling down to moderately embarrassing.
