Melody (1971)

Not for nothing has this been called the happiest film ever made. It's also, after Harold and Maude, the film to make the best use of pop music. The leads, Mark Lester and Tracy Hyde, are delightful to watch, and Mark Lester is reunited with Jack Wild, his co-star in Oliver!

Mendel (1997)

Unlike in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Life Is Beautiful, the 'child is ignorant of the events of the Holocaust' conceit actually works here. For one thing, our young hero is not smack in the middle of the camps, where such ignorance is not remotely plausible, but safe as a refugee in Norway, and for another, this is based on the childhood experiences of writer and director Alexander Røsler. That's probably also why this film succeeds in portraying a variety of Jews, with one family atheist but culturally Jewish and another devout and observant.

Meu Amigo Nietzsche (2012)

Funny and observant, with a serious aim: drawing attention to the problem of functional illiteracy in Brazil and presenting some typical Brazilian characters.

Mia aioniotita kai mia mera (1998)

Accessible Angelopoulous -- what a surprise! May well be his best film. Succeeds in condensing most of the better elements of his work while avoiding most of the worse.

Michou d'Auber (2007)

Cartouches gauloises (Summer of '62) and Les roseaux sauvages (Wild Reeds) did a better job of portraying the Franco-Algerian war through young eyes, but this is a decent effort, worth a watch. Nathalie Baye, who plays the foster mother, also played the mother in the excellent Mon fils à moi.

Mickybo and Me (2004)

Solid and likeable. A bit like Machuca. Clearly, some elements of the plot are exaggerated, but the film has been described as on the whole a very accurate depiction of being ten in Belfast in 1970.
