Paranoid Park (2007)

The only Gus van Sant film I've liked. Teenagers played by real teenagers talking and acting like real teenagers.

Paul Is Dead (2000)

A real gem of a movie with elements of mystery, adventure, family drama and friendship. Stars the highly talented Sebastian Urzendowsky, who's gone on to an adult acting career in which he's appeared in several more excellent off-the-beaten path projects -- special mention must be made of the daring and thoughtful TV film Guter Junge.

Peck's Bad Boy (1934)

Jackie Coogan in all his freckle-faced, flaxen-headed, slightly pudgy glory as the all-American daddy's boy dealing with his cousin, who's a spiteful know-it-all and a cissy mummy's boy to boot. The cousin is played by Jackie Searl, who had a great talent for acting smug and specialised in such roles, e.g. Tom Sawyer's cousin Sid. The plot is somewhat reminiscent of The Rival, a story from the second Just William book, More William (1922).

Peck's Bad Boy with the Circus (1938)

Mildly funny, especially the shots of Tommy Kelly in a muddy frock.

Le Pélican (1973)

Gérard Blain was a former boy actor himself and had several major adult roles, including in Truffaut's first film, Les Mistons, and Chabrol's excellent diptych Le Beau Serge and Les Cousins, before becoming a director. His cinematic style is definitely not everyone's cup of tea -- he told his actors not to project emotion, for instance -- but I love his works. This film has a lot to do with his experiences of emotional neglect in childhood and his intense love for his own sons. Les <<Amis>>, his outstanding semiautobiographical first film, tells the story of an intergenerational relationship and won the Golden Leopard at the 1971 Locarno film festival. Pierre et Djemila, his 1987 Romeo and Juliet story about a French boy and an Algerian-French girl, is somewhat overlooked now but also very fine.
