De Witte van Sichem (1980)

Taking certain liberties with the source material, director Robbe De Hert still created a great film and a brilliant realisation of Ernest Claes' character of De Witte - and Eric Clerckx is a complete natural in the role, really bringing the character to life. Watch out for the (intentional) anachronisms, such as the karate kick and the sound of a passing jet plane during the battle recreation sequence, designed to suggest that the story could just as well be contemporary.

Wszystko bedzie dobrze (2007)

A fine coming-of-age movie. Adam Werstak is an astonishingly natural actor and his attractively wiry frame is perfect for the role he plays.

Zamri, umri, voskresni! (1989)

I really love the mood of both this film, and its sequel "An Independent Life". Pavel Nazarov is just wonderful.

Zéro de conduite (1933)

I'm with Saga and Carl on this one. How anyone can not like this exuberant, anarchic masterpiece is beyond me.

I love this gorgeously rich depiction of part of Denmark's history, and the boys are just marvellous.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938)

Still probably the best cinema version of Twain's novel ever made, though I wish Mickey Rentschler was Tom, rather than Tommy Kelly. Jackie Moran is excellent, and David Holt's Sid is gorgeous!

Badhuset (1989)

Superb, authentic story of a childhood game that gets out of hand, mainly on account of the leader of a group of girls that the boy protagonist feels compelled to go around with, presumably because of the paucity of other kids to play with in his neighbourhood. The film is based on a short story by P. C. Jersild (author of Barnens ö / Children's Island, which was made into the 1980 film of the same name).

Den Bästa sommaren (2000)

Absolutely stunning. A wonderful film full of gentle humour, but with a serious, even darker, edge, as the kids fight for their right to love, to control their own lives and to live with whomever they like, against adult authority and against the state. Unmissable.

The Boy (2015)

An absolutely superb movie - in fact, something of a modern masterpiece. Jared Breeze is such a star - a remarkable young actor; I think few boys could have pulled off his role as effectively as he did. I have to confess something, though. I couldn't help having some sympathy for the boy's actions at the climax of the film, given the way the adults treated him - particularly the young adults at the end.

The Boys from Brazil (1978)

Gripping over-the-top story with wonderful performances from Olivier and Gregory Peck. Jeremy Black is superb as the various clones of Hitler. The interaction of these three actors in the climactic scene of the film is thrilling.
