Sweeney Todd (2006)

Well, I really liked it. I like the fact that Fielding is as melancholic as Sweeney Todd - a sort of mirror image of him, as it were. The movie is rather relentlessly grim, but it is indisputably atmospheric, and I think it is an interesting project to try to make a completely 'serious' version of the classic horror story. Oh, and I like the handsome, elegant boy [caps 3-8 in the BA Gallery] who delivers Mrs. Lovett's pies to Todd near the beginning.

Tarzan's Desert Mystery (1943)

This was the one which veered into fantasy horror, with man-eating plants, prehistoric lizard-like monsters, and giant spiders...and - believe it or not - it works! The shot of Boy (Johnny Sheffield) caught in the web of the giant spider, with the spider slowly approaching (and with Nancy Kelly somewhat ineffectually trying to free him), burnt itself into my memory as a kid. A very exciting Tarzan film, and a must-see for all Johnny Sheffield devotees. Highly recommended.

Tomer en Elias (2016)

An intriguing look at a close fraternal relationship. Mingus Claessen is such a charismatic young actor, I find myself wishing he'd starred in more films than just this one.

The Tomorrow People (1973-1979)

Some of the episodes and storylines were truly cringeworthy ("A Man For Emily", "The Thargon Menace") or just plain dull ("Slaves of Jedikiah", "The Vanishing Earth", "The Medusa Strain", "Into The Unknown"), but there were many which were actually rather entertaining ("Hitler's Last Secret", "A Much Needed Holiday", "The Doomsday Men", "Castle of Fear") and some were even rather good science fiction stories ("Living Skins", "Secret Weapon", "The Dirtiest Business"). Definitely worth a look; and even the poor episodes are worth enduring for the cast commentaries on the DVD discs - Peter Vaughan-Clarke and Nicholas Young really spark off each other to give what must be some of the most marvellously witty, funny and downright entertaining commentary tracks of all time!

Treasure Island (1950)

Bobby Driscoll is excellent as Jim Hawkins, but Robert Newton completely steals the show as Long John Silver. Disney at its finest.

I enjoyed this immensely, and Bale makes a fine Jim Hawkins.

Wah-Wah (2005)

A superb movie, that I don't think gets the appreciation it deserves. It portrays the British community in Swaziland at the end of Empire, and records their mannerisms, idiosyncratic vocabulary and (in some cases) their social snobbery, but does this with a great deal of affection for the characters. The narrative is really centred around Ralph's father and paints a portrait of a good man tormented by his own personal demons; it also vividly conveys Ralph's love for his father, despite everything. All the cast are wonderful, but I think Zac Fox is completely marvellous as the younger Ralph. He is very personable, and I found myself rooting for him all the way. His character has an interesting facial 'tick', which seems to be triggered by anxiety. Nicholas Hoult does a fine job as the slightly older Ralph. With such an amazing ensemble of performers, one can't really go wrong! Highly recommended.

The Witches (1990)

Charming and enjoyable. I was quite impressed by how they did the little talking mice. The witches conference scene was very well done as well.

Young Dracula (2006-2014)

The original two seasons were magnificent, brilliantly funny, witty and amusing, but the later seasons (after the 'hiatus') were not nearly as good, because the programme tried to become a 'serious' drama, and the humour suffered as a consequence. 9/10 for the first two seasons, 6/10 for the remainder of the series.

50 Ways of Saying Fabulous (2005)

The character I felt the greatest sympathy for was Roy (Jay Collins) - and everyone was unremittingly horrible to him throughout the entire movie! It was hard for me to feel much sympathy for the film's protagonist Billy (Andrew Patterson), though I quite liked Arch (George Mason). A very faithful adaptation of Graeme Aitken's novel. Definitely worth a view.

Arthur's Trip to India (2005)

Arthur Duncan makes a charming guide to India in what turns out to be a very interesting and enlightening series. The family seem to spend much of their time suffering from explosive diarrhea. This seems to be a tradition of the Brits abroad. I wonder whether Indians visiting England customarily get diarrhea from English food... "All this steak and kidney pie is playing havoc with my innards!!" sort of thing...

Benidorm (2007-2018)

If you're after beautiful people on the beach... avoid this series! Instead, we get hideously unaesthetic Brits abroad. I did, however, find it a great series to just relax to, and quite amusing, particularly in the earlier seasons.

Damien: Omen II (1978)

Well, yes, it's nonsense. The problem is that the boy Damien is very personable in the first half. Then he's told about his destiny by his officer at the military academy and he becomes sullen and not so talkative and starts putting the whammy on everyone. He is shown to have some initial conflict about his destiny, which is soon resolved (we are not privy to how). This suggests that he has a choice as to whether to accept this destiny or not. What a pity that Damien doesn't read what comes AFTER chapter 13 in the Book of Revelation. Then he might find that the Anti-Christ comes to a sticky end, and perhaps decide to have nothing to do with this caper after all. You'd think he'd at least read on till the end of the book to find out what happens to him! That's what you get when you raise kids with short attention spans. But if the film is so darn silly, then why do I secretly enjoy it so much? File under 'Guilty Pleasure'.

Dick Tracy (1990)

The surface aesthetic of this film is a triumph. I love the rogues' gallery of villains, I love Al Pacino as 'Big Boy', and I love Charlie Korsmo as 'The Kid'. However, if there's one criticism of this movie, it is that it is perhaps a little too two-dimensional - too much surface sheen and not quite enough emotional interest. What emotional interest there is in this picture is furnished by the Kid's developing relationship with Dick Tracy. Still, this is an unusual film, which is worth seeing at least once. Has anyone ever told Madonna that she's a rotten actress?

The Golem (2018)

Perhaps could have benefited from being a little tighter and faster paced... but it's hard to be too critical of a movie with a monster that literally thrusts its hand inside people and rips their hearts out! Not to mention making people's heads explode!
