The Boy in the Dress (2014)

Interesting curiosity about a boy named Dennis who loves football, enjoys war films, is best friends with another boy and is attracted to girls and not to boys, but who also, at twelve, discovers a love of getting into fashionable dresses and going out as his female alter ego, Denise. In other words, not a trans child but a burgeoning crossdresser, on kids' TV. Silly humour, a great twist at the end and a nice message of acceptance arguably undercut by David Walliams's (he wrote the book) turn as an effeminate, fluff-headed drama teacher who becomes a useless substitute referee -- still, the film and book may go some way to reducing the world's total of pain around this sort of thing. Not in the same league though as the wonderful 1994 French short Tout le monde est parfait, about a transvestite whose young son lives with his prejudiced ex-wife and is turning out gay.

Breakfast with Scot (2007)

Decent, but the 1978 film Ang tatay kong nanay told this story first and told it better, which is no surprise, as it was directed by Lino Brocka, the Philippines' greatest director, who also gave us Manila in the Claws of Light, Bayan ko: Kapit sa patalim and Orapronobis. The excellent Chilean film Rara also deals much better with the subject of same-sex couples rearing children, and the excellent Peruvian film Retablo deals much better with the subject of homosexual parents generally.

Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

An OK adaptation of a wonderful book. I didn't really care for the CGI sequences that show us what the kids are imagining. Josh Hutcherson, however, elevates the film with his excellent acting.

The Browning Version (1994)

A self-consciously modern adaptation. The History Boys is a better treatment of some similar themes. The fine acting of Albert Finney and Ben Silverstone is a definite plus here. Silverstone went on to appear in the gay teen drama Get Real.

Bugsy Malone (1976)

I normally don't care for kids-playing-adults movies but this is surprisingly well done and a fun watch. Sweet Love is better, though.

La cage aux rossignols (1945)

A nostalgic charmer, though improbable and sentimental. The original of Les Choristes.

Casper (1995)

The at-one-time-ubiquitous Christina Ricci has a somewhat limited range as an actress but what she can do she does well. This is a fun film with some substance and a brief, late appearance by Devon Sawa that definitely makes an impression!

The Choir (1995)

Nice enough, lovely singing from Gloucester Cathedral Choir, though the selection of stodgy Victorian music could have done with some variation. That the future star chorister just walks in with a great voice isn't realistic -- singing like that takes a lot of training, and Anthony Way's St Paul's classmate Connor Burrowes was a far better treble in any case. Way, however, had the looks and the screen presence, used to great advantage here.

Les choristes (2004)

Middling pablum but touching in parts and worth seeing for Jean-Baptiste Maunier and the singing of Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc (mixed choir). Maunier, who sings very pleasantly though he's definitely not in the top rank of boy singers, was twelve and a half at the time of filming; he sang his last as a soloist a month past his fourteenth birthday, then retired, wishing to go out on a high note rather than wait until his voice began changing. Later he turned up again in the 2006 film of Le Grand Meaulnes.

A Christmas Memory (1997)

Not as good as the 1966 version narrated by Capote. Eric Lloyd is a charmer, though.

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey (2007)

Nice acting from Luke Ward-Wilkinson. Sweet if not particularly distinguished film based on the wonderful book of the same name written by Susan Wojciechowski and beautifully illustrated by P. J. Lynch.
