The Secret Garden (1993)
Pretty good, despite the addition of a romance between Mary and Dickon that skips merrily over the class taboos of the time. Kate Maberly is the standout for me here.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10The Secret Garden (1949)
Pretty good adaptation, but not as good as the faithful 1975 BBC miniseries. A miniseries also provides more elbow-room for conveying the emotional development Mary and Colin -- unlike the statically perfect Cedric Errol and Sara Crewe -- undergo in the book. Even there, though, Colin's story in particular is shortchanged by some rushed moments and some spots of weak acting.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Un Secreto de Esperanza (2002)
As in L'auberge espagnole, the ending could have come across as corny, but doesn't -- it works.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Shala (2011)
Beloved slice-of-life movie based on Milind Bokil's popular novel of the same name. Well-acted and made with much attention to authentic 1970s detail.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Shame and Glasses (2013)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10El silencio de Neto (1994)
Not as adroit as it might be at handling its various plot threads, but as the first Guatemalan film with international reach deserves respect and arguably laid some of the the groundwork for Jayro Bustamante's superb trilogy Ixcanul, Temblores and La Llorona.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Simon and the Witch (1987-1988)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Sipur Hatzi-Russi (2006)
Yep, like an Israeli Billy Elliot, with added love story. Vladimir Volov does a fine job. I did watch this in a Spanish dub (El Primer Baile) and it's likely something was lost in the dubbing. Certainly the switching between Hebrew and Russian was lost.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Skippy (1931)
The film that made Jackie Cooper a superstar.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Skippy - The Bush Kangaroo (1968-1970)
Charming series starring the talented Gary Pankhurst.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Sling Blade (1996)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Small Faces (1996)
Good, slightly hyperrealistic film. Reminded me in spots of Shane Meadows's films.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Snow in August (2001)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10So Dear to My Heart (1949)
Bobby Driscoll and a pet lamb! I was won over at once. The film combines live action with animated sequences.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Soapbox Derby (1958)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Sokout (1998)
Beautiful and soulful.
