50s comedies about families, such as "Father Knows Best", always told the story from the point of view of the adults. What made this series unique was that it took the point of view of the boys. Furthermore, this was in many ways the last gasp of an era when boys could still be boys, shortly before the onrush of modern feminism. How people view this series will thus depend very much on how they view social developments since the early 60s. Those who subscribe to the progressivist assumption that the present is more 'enlightened' than the past (ha ha ha) will be inclined to find reasons to denigrate it. But others will see the series for what it is: a gem and an absolute classic.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Conservative middle class values. 1950s America was surely never as simple or as easy as they would have us believe. the series still has a certain charm and rates highly in the nostalgia ranks.
