The scene where Huw arrives at the top of the Elevator with his Father's lifeless body had me in tears! I love this movie so much! in my opinion it has reached legendary status, because all the people that were associated with it, are dead, and that for me makes the movie a legend!
Roddy did exceptionally well, up against prominate actors!
walter Pidgeon was excellent! VERY much a must see!
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Roddy McDowall had just fled England after the beginning of the German air raids and come to America when he was instantly chosen for the part of young Hew. The Battle of Britain also led to the cancellation of the production in Wales - and so Zanuck and Ford had to adopt the Californian desert for the setting of a Welsh mining town. That's why they chose to make the movie in black & white.
Classic acting performances, outstanding character portrayal. Entirely different from modern productions, but still pervading and emotionally captivating.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10This movie is very very old and got no color but it is good and I like it much. Boy got cripple for while and he cant get out of bed. Very hard for family some times but film so good.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Sentimental filmmaking raised to an art. One of the most moving boy performances ever.
(if anyone's interested, the wonderful sonorous voice of the narrator belongs to Irving Pichel who had a rich and varied career as actor and director. I only mention this because it took me 30 years to find out who the heck the narrator was. One of his directed films, by the way, was DESTINATION MOON.)

A classic of all classics. Roddy McDowell did an excellent job. The movie had everything--some scenes laughable and some scenes sad. A very realistic film on the struggles of the miners in that day.An excellent film!
