Au revoir les enfants (1987)
I was dumb struck when I first saw this film. I used the final phrase of the head friar Au revoir les enfants when I leave a group of people. Haunting and the voice over at the end was chilling.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Dobrodruzství s nahým klukem (1964)
I haven't seen this with English subtitles but there is no need since the expressions on people's faces tell the story. It's a film that should be watched by everyone especially in these days when such a film would be regarded as child abuse. I wonder what the boy was thinking when in the tram with all those adults?
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Du er ikke alene (1978)
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Idi i smotri (1985)
Surely a film to remind people that war is a terrible business and that the ordinary people suffer. A harrowing film and a must see for UK people as they are trying to cut themselves off from Europe. We need to talk and emphasise our common heritage rather than be different. Goverments and media promote war and we the people suffer.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Nimmermeer (2006)
It's a while since I saw this film and the spell it cast over me was unbelievable. Really, really first cast.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Padre Padrone (1977)
a much watch film to gain an insight into life in Sardinia in the 20th century. They didn't even speak italian. Triump of spirit over family and circumstances.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Pixote (1981)
This film along with the follow up on how he died a few years after making the film is a truly upsetting film and makes one despair for the world. Another film chronicling the mess that Brazil is. Unfortunately it isn't limited to Brazil or South America.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Baby Bump (2015)
You need your head well screwed on to follow what is going on in this film. Its about a strange relationship between a boy and his mother. At one stage he is giving urine samples for his classmates. Do they test for drugs in schools in Poland? He gives birth to an egg from which he comes out of when hatched! His way of having a separate identity from his mother?
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Barnens ö (1980)
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Brecha (2009)
A sad sad tale of misunderstanding between recently released prisoner and widow and his motherless son and the interfering grandmother. Nicely told and the misunderstandings are revealed at the end.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10La Discesa di Aclà a Floristella (1992)
When I first saw this film I was horrified that such practises were as recent as the 1930s. I suppose that such practises are still alive and well, unfortunately, in the world. The power of the rich and the power of the Church in contrast with abject powerlessness of the ordinary people. Quality of the film I saw wasn't great.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Ellos Volvieron (2015)
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10En tu ausencia (2008)
A troubled boy, a nosey postman, dishonest teenagers and much more in this tale set in Andalusia with a lonely boy ready to do anything for an adult male friendship which goes horribly wrong.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10La Gloire de mon père (1990)
a delightful tale of a boy and his brother growing up in France before the First World War and their time in Provence. A time when pleasures were simple before the rude awakening of the war.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Ivanovo detstvo (1962)
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Jacquot de Nantes (1991)
a delightful film of childhood in Nantes directed by the future man's partner
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10James (2008)
a must see short for all parents and teachers.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Kan shang qu hen mei (2006)
a delightful show of defiance by a little boy put in a boarding school for four year olds. He can't even dress himself and they all poo together and are cleaned by the staff in an almost in a conveyor belt fashion.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Lord of the Flies (1963)
Much prefered this film than the USA made one later. A good reminder that if we scratch the surface the savage in us is released, and it isn't always noble.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Novecento (1976)
A frightening portrait of life in rural italy from 1900 to after World War II. Our blushes weren't spared and the sight of a man being killed with pitchforks will remain with me for ever. Things were barbaric. It would explain why Italy is still very much struggling to be a nation.
