Hunted (1952)

Jon Whiteley and Dirk Bogarde are a nice pair, they appear together again in The Spanish Gardener a few years later. Well crafted film with good performances.

I Am Gabriel (2012)

this is in so-bad-it's-good territory. the acting is a step below local theatre troupes, and the plot is the typical cheesy religious fare (but I've seen much worse on that front). The "saving grace" is the beautiful lead.

Ideal Home (2018)

The troubled boy showing up on the doorstep of a wealthy gay couple is veering on cliche at this point, but the film was still entertaining. Erasmus is a celebrity chef in a long term relationship with his production assistant Paul, though he has a son from a brief "experimentation" with heterosexuality, who in turn begets the grandson at the center of the story. It has a few pretty good jokes, but you can see them coming from a mile away. The plot is rather predictable as well. The product placement for Taco Bell is distractingly egregious.

The Innocents (1961)

Chilling film with a remarkable performance from Martin Stephens, and a script which Truman Capote helps elevate to a unique retelling of this story. It does drag a bit towards the end and more screen time with Stephens would have been nice.

It (2017)

Nice cast, but disappointing. Leans too heavily on 80s-nostalgia cliches. Characters lack depth.

Jojo Rabbit (2019)

I really enjoyed this film! Roman Griffin Davis is a great actor, especially given the tricky balance of humor and tragedy in this story. There's a definite Wes Anderson vibe here, and a WWII film from a different vantage point was refreshing. You almost feel disappointed when the quirky, pleasant (except for those public executions) Nazi town falls to the Allies.

The downside is that the Elsa character is rather unpleasant and unsympathetic, and Jojo's clear projection of a father figure onto Hitler isn't really explored. And, as usual, at the end the Americans are shown as the benevolent liberators and the USSR cold and cruel.

Like Sunday, Like Rain (2014)

I found it emotionally resonant. There is an unspoken tension between the two leads that is interesting to watch. Julian Shatkin's debut performance should position him for a solid career.
