The Spanish Gardener (1956)

This was a good one. The synopsis is a little unfair to the father, he doesn't view his son as "property" he feels jealous and worries the boy's love for the gardener will weaken their relationship.

Valentin (2002)

Great performances and strong script with a few funny moments. The poster and tagline give the impression this is a sort of romantic comedy with Valentin acting as "Cupid," but that's not really the case until the very end. The film is more about a child recognizing and eventually accepting the imperfections of the adults in his life. Disagree with the subtitle comments, I didn't have any issue following along.

Yin He Bu Xi Ban (2019)

I was nervous about the 2.5 hr running time, but that fear was unfounded! Very entertaining and keeps your attention throughout. Haowen Ma is an engineer whose crowning achievement, a new bridge, collapses on the day of its opening to the public. After he is jailed for negligence, his young son Fei Ma is placed in an elite boarding school that demands perfection. Upon Haowen Ma's release 7 years later, he discovers that his son is burnt out and on the brink of expulsion. He makes a bargain with the head teacher that he can turn around his son's academic performance through tutoring him at home, where he employs unorthodox methods that clash with the dominant cram-based pedagogy. Thus begins a twisty path to Fei Ma's adulthood and eventual career as a taikonaut. A great film about the love of a father and son in the face of adversity.

American Housewife (2016-????)

A bit formulaic, but a decent enough sitcom that provides a few good laughs each episode and has an appealing star in Daniel, whose character works to adopt the culture and customs of the upper middle class.

Breakfast with Scot (2007)

Not a cinematic masterpiece but a decent watch. It was nice to see a film about a gay couple raising a child and I liked how Scot helped the former hockey player Eric combat his internalized homophobia.

Clément (2001)

Good but a downer. There were several points where I thought that there was no way they could make this movie if the main character was a man instead of a woman. For instance, Marion making out with Clement between the bushes at his school. Jealousy was a big theme in the movie which is not something I enjoy. The characters were annoyingly wishy washy always changing their mind. But, they dealt with the subject manner without too much moralizing or vilification of Marion so that boosts my rating. The unconventional manner of filming is a little disarming at first but ends up working successfully. I would probably not watch again but I'm glad I did at least once. Oh and Clement is gorgeous.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul (2017)

I'm not a huge fan of this series, but caught this movie on TV and thought the negative reviews weren't warranted. Jason Drucker is quite charming in the title role and there are a few funny moments such as the Psycho homage.

Dick Tracy (1990)

Director Warren Beatty does a stunning job of capturing the look and feel of a comic strip in a live action film. There is a tongue-in-cheek absurdity that infuses everything from the dialogue to the set pieces. The Kid with his dramatic freckles and bright red newsboy cap, and his devotion to Tracy, steals the show, but Pacino as the philosophizing failure of a mob leader and Tess are also highlights. Madonna sings well here and this role is probably just about the entire bandwidth of her acting ability. She is passable until the last scene, which devolves into laugh out loud territory.

Pleasant film starring a cute Roger Mobley. Decent production values, plot is not too difficult to predict.

Dolphin Tale (2011)

I would give it a higher rating, but in the last half hour or so the writing really slips. The character conflicts evaporate as they quickly wrap up the story. Sawyer's relationship with his older cousin could have been more developed. I did like the last scene and I agree with others about the positive message and themes.

Explorers (1985)

This was a fun movie, though I kept waiting for more follow through on plot points that were set up and then dropped. Did the sheriff just decide to keep quiet abut the fact he saw a boy run away from home and fly away in a junkyard rocket ship? Did the boys' parents ever find out that their children had been sneaking out for several nights in a row and eventually left the planet, only to return home soaking wet? Wasn't anyone concerned about all the property damage that the little glowing orb caused throughout the neighborhood?

My favorite part is when Darren brings the beer to share as they devise a name for the ship. I kept waiting for there to be some kind of moralizing, but it was just nonchalantly accepted. Maybe that's the real reason that first trip doesn't go as smoothly as planned!
