Exuberantly silly.

Roman Mysteries (2007-2008)

Okay, I've only just begun watching this, but... A Jewish father and son are invited to dine at the home of a Gentile and the host serves them sea-snails - can you imagine any behaviour more insulting to a Jewish guest?!! The main girl character in the piece I find a little irritating. She has very 21st century attitudes as well - plenty of handwringing about slaves, and wanting to treat a slave as a friend. Yeah, right. Oh, and apparently people bathe (and swim) fully clothed as well. Basically, in terms of historical verisimilitude, it's sheer nonsense. Having said that... It is entertaining, in a funny way, and Harry Stott and Eli Machover are very likable as Lupus and Jonathan respectively. Just think of it as 21st century kids in Roman togs.

Ruined (2013)

What EXACTLY was the point of this film? Were we supposed to CHEER when Mr. Lewis repeatedly punches the boy's father in the face? If I were as much a CYNIC as my illustrious ancient namesake I might suspect that the whole purpose of this movie was to present the 'welfare services', the law and the judiciary in a benign light. None of it was very believable. And the whole thing is capped by some sanctimonious tripe about the grown-up son 'forgiving' his father. Lord, give me strength! The 'acting' oscillated between lamentable and cringe-worthy, before settling down to moderately embarrassing.

S tebou me baví svet (1982)

A fluffy, insubstantial comedy, centred mainly around the spousal relationships of three married couples, with a bit of slapstick thrown in for good measure. Bafflingly popular in its native Czechoslovakia.

Salas u malom ritu (1976)

A truly wonderful film about three boys in a German occupied village in Yugoslavia during the Second World War. One of the boys takes revenge on the Germans for having been humiliated and hit by a German officer in front of others. This unleashes a chain of events that will transform the villagers' lives for good. There is a young German soldier, Sep, who seems gentler and kinder than the others, and clearly likes the boys, and the boys intuitively like him alone out of the German soldiers. The film grew from an earlier popular TV series on Yugoslav television.

Salem's Lot (1979)

Actually, I think this is the most genuinely scary vampire movie I've ever seen. I saw it when I was a little kid, and the vampire boy scratching at the window gave me nightmares for ages - still does.

Sam (1973-1975)

There isn't an awful lot of Sam in Season One of "Sam" - most of the scenes are of adults talking to each other in domestic settings, with young Sam just popping up every now and then. The characters spend a great deal of time whinging about how tough their general conditions of life are in their historical era. You know, I can't STAND whingers. Kevin Moreton is a personable young actor whose quiet, sensitive, understated presence in the first season is certainly a pleasure to watch in between the adults moaning about their lives and raising their voices at each other. Possibly, though, he is just a touch too reserved and doesn't leave enough of an impression, though this may also be down to the screenwriting. For me, Sam's maternal grandfather Jack (played by Michael Goodliffe) was the standout character from this first season - though he's not a particularly attractive character!

Samostoyatelnaya zhizn (1992)

As good in its own way as its predecessor ("Freeze, Die, Come to Life"). Pavel Nazarov is a great actor and a very beautiful youth (watch the uncensored version!).

The Sandlot (1993)

Very lightweight, and a tad formulaic - but enjoyable. One feels that the movie fancies itself a "Stand By Me" for the nineties, but lacks the emotional depth. Still, on its own terms it has a certain charm. The acting is not exactly subtle, but Thomas Guiry is a remarkably photogenic boy.

Scrooge (1951)

Still the best film version of "A Christmas Carol" ever made. And if that doesn't deserve ten stars, then I don't know what does!

Scrooge (1935)

A decent adaptation, with some nice moments - though the narrative sometimes seems a little rushed and truncated, as though the writers and actors were trying to join the dots as quickly as possible. Scrooge's transformation after seeing Marley's ghost is so instantaneous that the various ghosts that follow are really quite redundant. Philip Frost is quite wonderful as Tiny Tim. Certainly worth viewing at least once.

Shadow Builder (1997)

Actually, I think it's a shade better (no pun intended!) than the other reviews on this page might lead one to expect. There really is something quite absurdly enjoyable about a priest who packs guns with laser sights, dispatches people with gay abandon, and tells law enforcement officers to f--- off. One feels it's the kind of concept one must have seen before in some other movie, and yet I don't think I have. Yes, the film's ridiculous, but in a charming B-movie sort of way. In any case, I rather enjoyed it.

Den Sidste Viking (1997)

Really superb story, with a real depth. A Nordic bleakness pervades this film. Some of the cinematagraphy is very striking. Holger Thaarup puts in a fine performance as Harald. A coming-of-age masterpiece.

Sigurd Drakedreper (1989)

This is actually much better than the other reviewers' ratings on this page would lead one to suspect. Yes, it's historical nonsense - in fact pure New Age hokum - absurdly situated in a Viking village. But so long as one puts aside historical verisimilitude (and provided one can look past the lead's rather frightful wig), one will find that this film is a thoroughly charming story about the camaraderie of boys. Sigurd (Kristian Tonby) makes friends with a captured Frankish boy who saves him from drowning, and the two strip naked by the riverside in order to get dry (and, I expect, to give the camera an opportunity to admire their youthful physiques). There isn't even a hint of heterosexual romance in the whole thing. Gradually, by forging new alliances amongst his own generation, Sigurd gains in courage and navigates a new, less warlike path, for his people. The premise of the film is that all boys are natural comrades, and that the love and loyalty of boys for each other is capable of solving all society's conflicts. Damn it, you KNOW it's true!

Simon and the Witch (1987-1988)

A series where all the sympathetic child characters are male, and where the boys do not spend all their time gazing at the girls in adoration (quite the contrary!)...in other words, a series made before identity politics took over the BBC and its programming output turned to crap. Elizabeth Spriggs makes a wonderful witch, all the boy actors are great, and Hugh Pollard clicks his heels beautifully in the closing credit sequence.
