Apollo 13 (1995)

I have a definite bias for movies dealing with the early US space program. This one is excellent. Miko Hughes melted my heart, but thats not news.

Arachnophobia (1990)

Aside from any boy movie considerations, I think this was John Goodman's single really funny performance. He had that exterminator character down cold.

L'Argent de poche (1976)

I guess my previous rating got lost. A charming, episodic tangle of kids lives and adult lives in a French town portrayed almost as a large family. Some of the most attractive and endearing boys I've seen in a movie.

Interesting, well done, but confusing.

Around the Bend (2004)

For me, a bit too weirdly set up to have any universal appeal; sort of a cracked mirror of life.

August Rush (2007)

Freddie Highmore was radiant and supremely winning as usual. My musical prejudices almost ruined the movie for me completely (the guy's singing). I usually love movies showing reality tinged with fantasy, but I do know when I am being had.

Also, I find that most popular movies that run almost to, or beyond 2 hours are heavily padded. This one could have easily been trimmed to 100 minutes.

Auntie Mame (1958)

Loved Willard Waterman whispering in Auntie Mame's ear the secret ingredient in his daiquiris : "honneeeyyyyyy!"

The Awakening (2011)

Oh, how I love fine movies in this spooky mode, especially those with a strong dose of emotion. This one belongs right up there with The Others, Devil's Backbone, The Orphanage, Dorm. Isaac has a very moving scene toward the end and my eyes were leaking.

Babycall (2011)

If you like the kind of movie that makes you backtrack to several scenes to find clues you missed, this is for you. But you will STILL be confused! This seems to be a psychological thriller with heavy doses of supernatural, fascinating in its own fuzzy way. I was hoping for a character at the end to summarize and explain everything - you know, like the old-fashioned "So there you have it, Lieutenant" kind of ending. (or like the ending of Psycho)

Le ballon rouge (1956)

Very sweet movie, beautifully photographed and cleverly done.

The special effects are very simple but I'm betting they were more exasperating to set up than more complex shots in other films.
