clearly one of my favourite movies, and i'm always a little saddened when i see that people usely don't enjoy it very much, which is a shame ; is it necessary to situate the well known plot ? an ageing artist, gustav von aschenbach, travels to venice where he becomes infatuated by a polish young boy, tadzio, who spends the holidays in the lido with his family ; this passionate love ultimately leads aschenbach to his death ; the film may seem quite long (in fact, the first time i saw it, i expected to be bored, but i was captivated from beginning to end), but in my opinion, apart from the russian lament by mussorgsky which opens the final scene, it would be a crime to suppress any passsage at all ;
i can also understand that the story either moves the viewer very deeply, which was my case, or leaves him or her completely indifferent ; it certainly is an intellectual movie combining psychological issues with philosophical ones (which belong to the platonician repertoire ; the main issue is the origin of beauty, and, if beauty truly comes from the senses, the possibility, or not, of the artist to reach the 'spirit', what plato called the world of ideas ; hence the long quotation from plato's phaedrus in mann's novella ; in fact, as the plot demonstrates, the artist is doomed in essence, he tries to reah the spirit through the senses, but ultimately is caught back by them ; though Nietzsche's problematic is radically different, the apollinian element is caught back by the dyonisian forces, and this signifies the doom of the artist) ;
having said that, bogarde's performance is very deeply felt and truly moving ; as for bjorn andresen, one can not really speak of a performance in the strict meaning of the term (he hardly says anything) ; visconti's adaptation of the novella (he adds elements taken in mann's great novel, the Doktor Faustus ; to one familiar with the philosophical issues at stake, it is not always coherent) is intelligent, as is the well-known transformation of aschenbach from a writer into a musician, the composer gustav mahler, whose beautiful adagietto (from the Fifth) follows aschenbach along his downfall (the fourth movement from the Third is also a beautiful piece) ; and as always, visconti's filming is magnificent
