The 1940s House (2001)

Fantastic concept, and they couldn't have chosen a better family to take part.

The Hymers were a perfect example of a 21st century family reliant upon pre-packaged food and the luxuries of modern living, so having to deal with the austerity and deprivation of wartime conditions came as more than a challenge for them.

In true boyhood spirit, the boys grasped the experience with both hands though :-)

Angela's Ashes (1999)

A fantastic film about one boy's struggle through grinding poverty to manhood. There are many bleak and tragic moments, from the outset, but it is a highly inspiring film about the power of the human spirit against all odds.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008)

Very powerful. Fantastic acting by Asa Butterfield. A brilliant film, but one that I can only watch once - it got into my head and it was all I could think about for days afterwards. Whoever you are, make sure you have a big box of tissues ready when you watch it.

Into the West (1992)

A fantastic movie, blending gritty realism with myth. Two boys rescue a horse from a millionaire horse-racer and run away to the west of Ireland, pursued by the horse's owner and the police. Their father, who abandoned the family's travelling lifestyle after the death of his wife, enlists the help of his old gypsy friends to find his sons. In doing so, he becomes the father he should have been before once again.

Second Best (1994)

A true classic. Sometimes upsetting & disturbing, but always thought-provoking and heart warming. Chris Cleary-Miles is just superb.

It's just a crying shame I had to find out about this movie by accident.

The Sixth Sense (1999)

Widely regarded as a truly original movie. Bruce Willis is actually very good in it as well, proving he can act when he wants to, without having to wear a dirty vest.

If there is anything more amazing than Haley's debut (well, almost debut), it's that he's managed to escape the possible typecast of being 'the kid from the Sixth Sense'.

Billy Elliot (2000)

A fantastic film which must be seen. Jamie Bell makes a superb debut as a boy growing up in the north of England during the eighties' miner's strike who takes up ballet dancing, much to his father's initial chagrin.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

A fantastic adaptation of the book. Freddie Highmore was wonderful - he has a very natural talent, and Johnny Depp's performance has just the right amount of lunacy and sinister undertones.
