Big (1988)

This movie is great. I mean, really. That's what every boy dreams of - to become an adult overnight! It's absolutely gorgeous to see Tom Hanks' performance - that's real acting, it requires a lot to play this part as genuinely and cordial as he did.

The message is so clear and so honest. The nostalgic edge is of such profound significance to the story. It's about the differences between being a kid and being an adult. It's about two very different perceptions of the same world that surrounds us. It's just us and how we make the best out of every day of our lives, and all it needs is to see the world through the eyes of a kid. A kid perceives all the things differently, with much more native and modest simplicity - the keystone to imagination and magic, the keystone to cherish the daily miracles in our lives.

This movie has a deep and very pervasive message. It has so much charm and vitality mingled with nostalgia and witchcraft. One of those movies I enjoyed watching when I was a kid. Recommended.

Big Daddy (1999)

Okay, I watched this movie and thought it had some good sequences, but then again, it was just corny. Like at the very end at the court hearing when everyone grabbed their cell phones and called their dads while sobbing - that's just utter crap. Apart from that I don't like Adam Sandler, which I concede is a personal bias. Nonetheless it HAD some witty sequences, although most of them did not seem genuine and are unlikely to occur in reality. There are much more substantial movies out, so we definitely needn't praise this one too high.

The Bike Squad (2002)

Braden Parkes is a very handsome young actor, but this movie sucks. I am normally rather reluctant with criticism, but this movie is absolutely horrible. Bad acting, stereotypical developments, corny story, shameful transformation and awkward handling of emotional scenes.

Bingo (1991)

I absolutely loved this movie when I was a kid of about nine years. It made me feel good and I enjoyed the adventures of Bingo and Chuckie. A very good movie, funny and sincere.

Blank Check (1994)

The story was entirely surreal, but nonetheless great! What anyone who rates and reviews movies ought to bear in mind is what the respective movie aims at. It's the same with "First Kid", which follows a similar pattern. Certain movies - like this one here - just aim at plain and comical nonsense. Such movies can't be rated from the point of view of a hypercritical reviewer. Of course these movies lack quality, lack a sophisticated storyline, very often lack first-class acting, but if they do fulfil their primary premise - that's okay. I don't have this movie here on my list of all-time favorites, but I still thought it was funny, had some very enjoyable sequences and made a good story. Brian Bonsall is a smart actor anyway.

Blöde Mütze! (2007)

Wonderful movie, highly recommended. About friendship, loss, loyalty, first love, trust, faith and daily struggles. The lead actor Johann Hillman as Martin is absolutely adorable, as cute as hell and a pleasure to watch. The other two characters, Konrad Baumann as Oliver and Lea Eisleb as Silke, are giving first class performances as well, their interaction is straight and genuine. I enjoyed it a great deal, mostly because it managed to portray three individuals finding real strength in each other. The movie explores their family backgrounds and deals with common struggles as well as the joys and pains of growing up. It avoids cliches and by getting around a feel-good ending, it turns into a perfectly laudable accomplishment. I give it a 9 for boy-performance and story.

The Blue Lagoon (1980)

I didn't particularly like this one, but the idea is definitely very interesting. The kind of growing up far off any cultural influences makes a good story. The acting was decent, but not outstanding. There could have been a more sophisticated transformation of the idea.

Blues Brothers 2000 (1998)

A genre of its own. Not as legendary and classic as the original, but definitely worth watching for those who like the genre, the actors and/or the music. Buster is cool in his black suit.

El Bola (2000)

Good drama. The ending is a bit abrupt and doesn't answer all questions, which is surely done deliberately. The characters are believable - especially the boys are very good. Shocking and honest portrayal of a young lad trying to escape from his beastly father.
