Romulus, My Father (2007)

I enjoyed this movie a great deal. Kodi's performance is at least worth 9 out of 10 stars. The cast is magnificent, Eric Bana is mature and rock solid as Romulus Gaita, a hard working man who (if I remember correctly) originally comes from Romania. He left Europe some time ago with his German wife Christina (Franka Potente) and settled in Australia with two Romanian brothers, obviously his best friends from back home, to establish a new life. Then things just go wrong, Christina has a thing for other men and eventually falls for one of the two brothers, Mitru, and moves in with him. She occasionally returns to see Rai (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Hora, the other brother, is the central figure for me, a character who is always there when Rai needs him. He takes care of him after Romulus has an accident, he introduces him to philosophy, he is a wise and loyal friend to Romulus and in the end, as it turns out, the only person who never lets Rai down. The main story is about the family falling completely apart. I won't go into details here, but it is real tragedy that ensues, and everything is seen through the boy's eyes. He is a natural charmer, a smart kid with one endearing smile and character. The father-son bond is the strongest theme in the movie, because it is central in almost every moment. There are heart-breaking moments, never too melodramatic to spoil the gritty realism of the story. You get a wonderful Australian countryside, a setting in the early 60s, and an almost classic family story about coming to terms with love, courage and the enduring promise of hope. I found all performances to be extremely honest and mature, and with Kodi's character guiding you through the various tragic events with heart-breaking innocence, boyish opportunism and with complete devotion to his mother and father, the story attains a fine level of quality and a huge emotional undertone, where depression and inspiration are never far apart.

A Rumor of Angels (2002)

Trevor Morgan is a brilliant young actor. He is the protagonist and has lots of screen time. Very emotional melodrama with great themes and a fine cast.

Running Scared (2006)

High-speed action, nicely developed plot, well-paced storyline developments and twists. I was particularly fond of the considerable screen time of the two boys - in fact they have to bear a significant part of the plot, something very rare in classic action movies. Both of them manage to set their stamp on the storyline and do a great job in dealing with the omnipresent violence. Paul Walker as protagonist Joey Gazelle is their main partner and allows both Bright and Neuberger to show their abilities in certain moments you need to watch out for.

The Santa Clause (1994)

A wonderful movie, dealing with a different approach to a very famous and well-known background story. A must-watch for christmas! It has an awesome Tim Allen, great images and a very smart plot which is suited for kids as well as for adults. You just have to believe, that's all! Imaginative cinematic brilliance at its best.

I loved it. Very strongly reminiscent of Stand By Me - there were even some dialogues and sequences almost identical to the classic by Stephen King.

Second Best (1994)

Oh my God, I'm speechless. Probably the best man-boy movie ever apart from The Man Without a Face. I'm so glad I finally came to see it. Simply brilliant.

Secondhand Lions (2003)

Great family movie with some coming of age rites of passage. I prefer the original ending (which is included on the DVD). It's much better than the actual ending which is shorter and just corny.

The Secret Garden (1993)

Heydon Prowse plays a difficult character in a very experienced way. The overall story is well-known. Its transformation in this version was good. The father-son aspect was a bit underdeveloped and lacked real emotional depth, especially from Colin's dad. I think one could have made this movie more sophisticated, more vivid and realistic. It's the genre though I guess that has to be considered. The magical elements were fine. However, it didn't make it to one of my favorites.

Shadrach (1998)

Scott Terra is one of my favorites. This movie here is a very good one, and he plays a substantial role. The story is fairly simple, but it is the fine cast and the cultural burden of how to deal with an old slave that adds a sincere message to the plot. Harvey Keitel plays - apart from Scott - a significant character. The messages of doing the right thing, of confronting the legacy of our cultural past and of dealing with death and the brittleness of life, mingled with the many calm and quiet sequences of the movie, make it a valuable example of emotional and sophisticated film-making. Scott is in the center, and he comes to experience both the tragedies and the magical moments of life, symbolized by the events of this summer experience.
