The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990)

I loved this one as a kid. I basically agree with the previous review. Jonathan Brandis was a genuine actor who had natural talent and personal charm. May he rest in peace.

The NeverEnding Story III (1994)

Bad one. Not even half as good as part two, or even part one. Jason James should have never done this. Bad script, weird characters, just disappointing.

The NeverEnding Story (1984)

Yeah, sheer magic. One of my childhood classics. Wonderful. Barret Oliver is brilliant, so natural and genuine. Watching this movie today makes me a bit sad of having grown up. I remember how emotionally drained I was back then as a kid after having seen this one. It's good that there aren't more movies out there which are as unique. Otherwise this one wouldn't be as unique as it is.

The Next Best Thing (2000)

I admit that the beginning is just cheesy and absolutely horrible, riddled with stereotypes and awkward performances. It gets better from the moment on when Madonna confronts Rupert Everett's character (Robert) with his upcoming paternity. The moral implications of a gay man and a straight woman deciding to raise a child together are indeed challenging and very much up-to-date. Here the comedy aspect is overlaid by some sincere issues that make this movie more interesting than the beginning has implied.

The movie even turns into a family drama and becomes very emotional. You will love Malcolm Stumpf as Sam, the protagonists' son. He is very convincing and shows substantial natural talent, which adds considerable quality to the story. The final dramatic climax is an ensuing court room struggle for custody of the little boy between Robert and Madonna with her new boyfriend Ben. This causes very strong moral and emotional implications. Robert's desperate struggle and his honest commitment to be together with his beloved son goes straight into your heart and addresses the issue of homosexuals and their rights to raise children. Here again Malcolm Stumpf bears a significant part of the emotional burden, and does so genuinely.

This movie is very simple in its equipment, but the messages delivered and the characters portrayed make it worthwhile. Rupert Everett does a great job, and Madonna shows that she can act if she has to. It is a very tough subject, and in the end you will not consider the movie a comedy any longer. This is a good thing.

Night of the Hunter (1955)

Come what may, Night of the Hunter is a classic. Robert Mitchum's character portrayal defined a new category of the wicked, ambivalent villain. The boy, Billy Chapin, plays an important role in the movie, impelling the storyline and adding emotional depth and sincerity to the plot.

Nochnoy dozor (2004)

A thorough disappointment. The story has the potential of a stunning fantasy masterpiece, but the transformation on screen - above all the pathetic storyline with scores of incoherent happenings - is a shame. The special effects and the suspense of the trailer yield to weak characters and a loose story that is everything but comprehensible. The final climax - again potentially a highlight of suspense and action - is as awkward and unemotional as it could have possibly been. If this is typical Russian filmmaking, then I'm very glad not to live there.

I still give Night Watch a 3 because of the leading boyactor, Dmitry Martynov. He is the most emotional, but he fails to live up to the leading role of his character.

I'm sure an American adaptation of this complex and thrilling story would be much more satisfying.

North (1994)

Oh, that's bad. A rare movie with Elijah Wood that lacks quality. The storyline is nonsense and despite his personal good acting, there's nothing in this movie that might be taken seriously. It's not even funny.

Nowhere To Run (1993)

Great movie here! A good and convincing performance by van Damme, who acts off the typical action-and-brainless-movie genre. It's Kieran Culkin who gives a tremendous emotional edge to the story due to his sincere and heart-wrenching performance. I like him. He's decent and genuine in here. Congrats to him, keep up the good work, Kieran!

Nuovo cinema Paradiso (1988)

Cinema Paradiso is a very simple movie with one particular theme that makes it special: The magic of the movies. The storyline follows the path of a famous Italian director and traces his career back to his early childhood days, when he spent countless hours with his adult friend Alfredo in the projection room of the little cinema in their village. The two of them grow quite close, and it is fair to say that Alfredo becomes a kind of real father for little Toto, whose natural father died in World War II. After a horrible incident that leaves Alfredo blind, Toto himself becomes the projectionist, a job he performs for many years.

The movie further extensively elaborates on Toto's first love and on many subtle themes, such as Alfredo fatherly guidance and Toto's time in the army. Throughout the proceedings of the story, the magic of movies plays an important part. The inspiration and impact on ordinary people in those early days of the cinema, the way people were emotionally stirred and how they participated actively with cheers, laughters and even tears, all these aspects are transformed into the movie in a way that is maybe a bit over-subscribed and occasionally a bit corny, but very authentic and with a marked nostalgic edge.

Cinema Paradiso is a very subtle and slow movie. It is a typical Italian movie in terms of pace and camera work. I was occasionally reminded of Once Upon A Time in America and Martin Scorsese's narrative style. It is a very nostalgic movie with lots of sad moments that make you aware of the passing of time. At the same it is the story of Toto and his relationship with Alfredo, who was more a father than a friend to him. It is maybe a bit too long, and some moments could have been made more interesting and more helpful for a quicker proceeding of storyline developments.

Oliver Twist (1997)

Ah, wonderful! Alex Trench is a perfect Oliver Twist, congrats to the casting officials. Elijah Wood and Richard Dreyfuss add tremendous quality to the movie, great! The story is a bit off the original artwork by Charles Dickens, but in this case, it works perfectly. It's a childrens' story, but I enjoyed it a lot, despite being 21.

Oliver Twist (2005)

Good movie. The visuals are great, living up to Dickens' contemporary perception of London. Barney Clark is doing well, but I somehow didn't feel as emotionally attached to him as I'd have expected. His character could have been made deeper and more vivid; he just seems too depressed and silent. Maybe this is done deliberately. The rest of the movie is just great, featuring a gloomy and dark atmosphere and a nice cast.
