Dark Skies (2013)

I give it a "must watch" because the ending made me jump up and pace up and down in front of the TV in nervous anticipation... excellent mixture of suspense and mystery... excellent boys as well, Dakota surely knows how to do it

The Day The World Ended (2001)

Bobby Edner did a great job in here. I loved the way he projected his character's emotional confusion and how he dealt with his apparent alien heritage. How stirring is the scene when the alien monster approaches him by leaving a path of destruction and death behind it and young Bobby shyly whispers "Dad?" towards the creature? That's awesome.

Despite a rather fine cast, the entire movie was an apparent cheap production and - to be very honest - the alien was a real shame. That's what happens to low-budget productions trying to create something beyond their financial capacity. The characters were shallow most of the time and the story did not develop in a too sophisticated manner. However, I liked the movie as a whole due to a) Bobby Edner, who just aced a very difficult and emotionally ambiguous role and b) the story, which had its good basic approaches nicely delivered and was interesting to follow. I'll award it with a 7 due to my personal preferences, though it normally is not to be rated above a solid 6.

Day-O (1992)

Yeah, the story itself is not very sophisticated, I know. Still, it's Elijah who makes it worth watching. An average movie, nothing special.

Dear Frankie (2004)

I have hardly ever seen a character portrayal as genuine and profound as in this movie. Emily Mortimer is the archetype of the caring and protective mom who sacrifices everything she has to protect her son and to enable him to live a decent life amidst austere conditions.

Frankie stands at the movie's center, he carries the emotional and sensual burden. Jack McElhone has a subtle and very gentle manner that makes his character shine. Frankie's sensibility combined with his fragility and the way McElhone is able to transmit the emotional strains of both his hearing disability and the yearning for his father create an atmosphere of entire authenticity and integrates the viewer into this valid depiction of one family's struggle.

Gerard Butler is very inapproachable and callous in the first place. At imdb, some criticised the corny depiction of him gradually developing a real bond towards the boy and eventually his mom. I have to rebut this reproach. There is hardly any movie which has a more sincere and authentic development as featured in Dear Frankie. He responds to Frankie in the same diffident manner that composes his character. He is able to transmit both an emotional development and a sincere and authentic portrayal of a lonesome character who gradually approaches to the unyielding affection of Frankie. The scene in which Butler and Mortimer walk along the wharf and engage in a realistic conversation is a brilliant example of the perfect and subtle interaction between the main characters. Butler is as firm as his role demands, yet still able to show a soft and sentimental edge when interacting with Frankie.

The story is simple but incredibly strong, thus following the premise of classic film-making. The setting is the Scottish seaside. From the angle of socio-cultural criticism, the depiction of the setting is a requisite for the profound authenticity the movie is able to deliver. The surrounding determines the characters and shows the harshness of life in Scotland. Thus Frankie, shy and fragile as he is portrayed, symbolizes the strength of individual determination and the power of dreams.

Dear Frankie is a wonderful accomplishment in its depiction of the dreams and hopes of a young boy, in its authentic interpersonal affiliations and in its honest approach to love and the relationship between individuals who are trying to make each other's life better.

Dennis the Menace (1993)

Very funny, great story, wonderful actors. Walter Matthau is ideal for the character of Mr. Wilson. The movie itself is simple, but the gorgeous events are just great.

Desperate Measures (1998)

Yeah, it's the emotional father-son aspect that carries much of the story's quality. I remember that a) the action was okay, b) the storyline was clearly presented, c) the acting was also okay, d) the outcome was somehow predictable, but the pace and the suspense makes me connive some apparant flaws. Joseph Cross did play a substantial part in terms of his illness propelling all the other events, but as an actor and concerning his importance on screen his character lacked some sort of real depth. The emphasis was clearly on the thriller-aspect, less on the drama-aspect.

Desperation (2006)

I give it an 8 because it is an almost perfect adaptation of the novel - probably because Steven King wrote the screenplay himself. Shane does what his part allows him to do - David Carver as the main protagonist would have needed a bit more depth and emotional complexity as a character to live up to my image of the religious and handsome young lad I encountered in the novel.

Dog Days of Summer (2007)

The boys did a fine job. I liked the ending, when the narrator actually meets his younger self, and, this time, takes him with him - which for me means reconcile himself with his past and emerge as a stroger, healthier person as a result of it.

Dog's Best Friend (1997)

A nice movie well worth watching, at the very least for the unusual feature of talking animals but also as it has an interesting story and a smart Adam Zolotin.

Dolphin Tale (2011)

In a world in which horror and action movies reign supreme, it is refreshing to see a genuine family movie surface, probably the best since the first Free Willy movie, which pretty much follows a similar pattern. Nathan Gamble does a wonderful job and proves that he is one of Hollywood finest boy actors. We quite frankly need more movies like this, movies that have the potential to inspire children and adults alike and make all of us aware of the most important things in life.

Domestic Disturbance (2001)

Yeah, not too good, but still a bit underrated here. I enjoyed the movie - it was thrilling and the characters were fine. Concerning the ending being predictable - I mean, hey, how often does the bad guy actually win? From this pov, the ending was predictable. It was just a question of HOW Matt and John Travolta playing his dad would eventually succeed. Right, Matt did a good job in here. I give it a 7 because I didn't think it was boring when I watched it. There's definitely worse stuff out there.

Dreamcatcher (2003)

I read the book prior to watching the movie and was somehow disappointed by the end. I didn't like the filmmakers idea of Duddits being an alien. The movie itself is still worth watching, as it has its good sequences. The story is very mysterious and exciting, at least at the beginning when you don't know what the hell is going to happen. The bathroom/shower scene is very good, poor old Beaver. It is a typical Stephen King movie, as many of his stories have these flashback-to-the-past patterns. Here it was nice, but lacked some kind of real emotional affiliation with the present. It could have been made better, no doubt. The boys are doing a good job, though to me they seemed to be too different from the book.
