The Kings of Appletown (2007)

OK rural adventure in which the twin boy stars play cousins, with Dylan's hair cropped and dyed brown. Or else it's a wig. This must have been filmed around the same time as Suite Life season 3; it's interesting to see them tackle something a bit more substantial than the one-note silliness of their Suite Life characters.

Kinoglaz (1924)

Propaganda piece, exuberantly innovative, very interesting prelude to the unmissable Man with a Movie Camera. Could make a good dual watch with A Bronx Morning.

Kiseki (2011)

Touching and well done but slightly improbable. Doesn't quite measure up to Koreeda's best film, the superb Still Walking. Also see Happy Hour.

Kisses (2008)

A little reminiscent of Darren Thornton's Frankie, a superb short film about a 15-year-old father-to-be, but not as good. Still very watchable.

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (2008)

Decent spinoff of the popular, and expensive, American Girl Doll line, from back when the dolls' stories were about history.

The Kitchen Toto (1987)

A worthy and affecting effort, though as an examination of colonialism in Africa it's not a patch on Sarah Maldoror's Sambizanga, Mwezé Ngangura's Identity Pieces, Safi Faye's Mossane, Anne Mungai's Saikati, Ngabo Léonce's Gito l'ingrat, Julien Duvivier's Pépé le Moko or Ousmane Sembène's La Noire de..., Mandabi, Emitaï, Xala and Faat Kiné.

Krummerne (1991)

Fun and beloved Danish family movie. The lively toddler Lukas Forchhammer, who plays Grunk, has had an interesting later career. A Danish-Irish kid growing up in the roughish, hippyish self-governing Freetown Christiania enclave of Copenhagen, he went on to sing and tour with the world-famous Copenhagen Boys' Choir, get into theatre in his teens, do quite a lot of voice-acting work for the Danish dubs of Disney animated films, and become the lead singer of the popular band Lukas Graham. He's said that he doesn't remember much about the 'Crumbs' movies as he was so young when they were filmed and that they weren't a big influence on him, but that his family did get to take a nice holiday to Mallorca with the money!

Kung-fu Master! (1987)

This film has been somewhat overlooked, perhaps due to the controversial subject matter, but I think it's excellent -- among Varda's best, along with Cléo from 5 to 7; Vagabond; L'Une chante, l'autre pas; and Mur Murs. There's an interesting atmosphere of family cosiness to the proceedings, as Jane Birkin and Varda were longtime close friends, Birkin's character's daughters are played by her real daughters and Julien is played by Varda's son, Mathieu Demy; you get the impression that Varda's unique take on this story perhaps grew partly out of the real-life relationships among the cast. The subplot about AIDS prevention is inserted because Varda's husband, Jacques Demy, was ill with AIDS at this point -- it would soon kill him. Mathieu Demy turned up again in 2011 as the father in the magnificent Tomboy by Céline Sciamma, director of the likewise excellent Water Lilies, Girlhood and Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
