I Was a Rat (2001)

Good miniseries/movie based on Philip Pullman's even better novel.

I'll Remember April (1999)

Plot similar to that of Robert Westall's classic semi-autobiographical novel The Machine Gunners.

I, Claudius (1976)

Fantastic series, justly celebrated. The standout is surely John Hurt, who included among his many other roles that of Quentin Crisp in The Naked Civil Servant and An Englishman in New York.

Ideal Home (2018)

Humour often silly and somewhat mean-spirited, but Jack Gore is charming.

Idi i smotri (1985)

Brilliant and harrowing. Often described as the greatest war film ever, and surely only equalled by a few others: The Human Condition; Fires on the Plain; The Battle of Algiers; The Ascent; Wooden Crosses; Army of Shadows; La Bataille du rail; A Man Escaped; The Profession of Arms; Jancsó Miklós's three films The Round-Up, The Red and the White and My Way Home; and A Generation, Kanal and Ashes and Diamonds, a trilogy by Andrzej Wajda, who also directed three outstanding films on the Polish labour movement: The Promised Land, Man of Marble and Man of Iron.

Ik ben echt niet bang! (2010)

A short follow-up piece caught up with Mack at fourteen, still doing great.

Ikingut (2000)

The best thing about this film is that it doesn't take itself too seriously.

Ikke naken (2004)

A lighter, more humorous second piece by the director of Bare skyer beveger stjernene. One of the best films ever made about late childhood and first love. Natural performances from the two child leads: Bernhard Naglestad as Andy and Julia Krohn as Selma.

The Impossible (2012)

Excellent disaster/survival flick with a fine, memorable performance by the multitalented Tom Holland, fresh from Billy Elliot: The Musical, in a testing role. In an early scene he gets a chance to show off his impressive gymnastics skills. Based on the story of a real family (from Spain, not Britain) and has been praised for its accuracy. The name-shouting is distractingly excessive in spots but that's a minor problem. The prolific Geraldine Chaplin, a daughter of Charlie Chaplin who gave an unforgettable performance in Cría cuervos, has a bit part. Could make a good dual watch with Kameradschaft.

In Love with Life (1934)

Treacly Little Lord Fauntleroy knockoff starring Dickie Moore in a role he frequently played: tearful kid caught in the middle of adult strife.

In the Family (2011)

Not your run-of-the-mill gay stepparent drama. Unusual and thoughtful. Sebastian Banes and Patrick Wang's scenes together are beautifully acted. They really look like a parent and young child who love each other. Also see Patrick Wang's later two-part feature A Bread Factory.

Incompreso (1966)

Classic Italian tearjerker, but more than that: also a fine and involving psychological drama. The boys turn in great performances.

Infancia clandestina (2012)

The same main themes as Machuca: a child's-eye view of political conflict and murderous dictatorships in the 70s in South America; love in a time of war. In Machuca, however, the central love relationship is the friendship between two boys, whereas this film deals with family love, including the boy's close relationship with his adored uncle, and with the romantic love between the boy and a girl he meets at school. This romance is delightfully depicted and owes a lot to Melody (1971), which was more popular in Latin America, and Japan, than it ever was in its country of origin, England. Teo Gutiérrez Moreno does a great job as the main character, as does Violeta Palukas as his girlfriend. Surrealistic dream scenes and the portrayal of violent moments through animated sequences add an original touch. This is a semi-autobiographical film and clearly very personal for the director: photos of his own parents are shown during the credits. It grew out of his earlier short Veo Veo. Would make an interesting dual watch with La historia oficial and with Costa-Gavras' State of Siege, about the Tupamaros in Uruguay.
