Infancia clandestina (2012)

The same main themes as Machuca: a child's-eye view of political conflict and murderous dictatorships in the 70s in South America; love in a time of war. In Machuca, however, the central love relationship is the friendship between two boys, whereas this film deals with family love, including the boy's close relationship with his adored uncle, and with the romantic love between the boy and a girl he meets at school. This romance is delightfully depicted and owes a lot to Melody (1971), which was more popular in Latin America, and Japan, than it ever was in its country of origin, England. The Teo Gutiérrez Moreno does a great job as the main character, as does Violeta Palukas as his girlfriend. Surrealistic dream scenes and the portrayal of violent moments through animated sequences add an original touch. This is a semi-autobiographical film and clearly very personal for the director: photos of his own parents are shown during the credits. It grew out of his earlier short Veo Veo. Would make an interesting dual watch with La historia oficial and with Costa-Gavras' State of Siege, about the Tupamaros in Uruguay.

The Innocents (1961)

Cripes what a creepy chiller, and what amazing cinematography from Freddie Francis. It manages not to be a piece of dated Freudianism: the themes are just as topical now. Martin Stephens is great.

Irgendwo in Berlin (1946)

One of the 'rubble films' made shortly after the Second World War. Would make an interesting dual watch with The Joyless Street, a good G. W. Pabst film about Vienna shortly after the First World War, starring then-famous Danish actress Asta Nielsen and Greta Garbo before she went to Hollywood. Would also be interesting to watch together with Floating Clouds, Mikio Naruse's wonderful film about postwar Japan, which was followed by the equally wonderful When a Woman Ascends the Stairs and Yearning.

Ivanovo detstvo (1962)

Tarkovsky learning his craft as a filmmaker. Great art. In my view his best film after Andrei Rublev. If Soviet depictions of the Second World War are of interest, also take a look at at The Ballad of a Soldier, The Cranes are Flying and Commissar, each of which is excellent in its own way.
