The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

It's a cult classic but I didn't care for it. For something in this line, but much better and genuinely hilarious, see the 1978 film La cage aux folles.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938)

Tom Sawyer is hard to adapt for the screen because Twain's humorous running commentary is half the point of the book, but this film is very enjoyable and surely the best screen version ever made.

Aferim! (2015)

Grim, excellent film by Radu Jude, director of the remarkable Everybody In Our Family. Based on real events, dialogue largely from primary sources.

Much loved in South Korea. Melodramatic in places but very well-acted.

Aideistä parhain (2005)

Based on Heikki Hietamies's novel and directed by Klaus Härö, who's also given us the likewise very good films The New Man and Elina: As If I Wasn't There.

Kevin Zegers's interactions with the golden retriever have some charm.

Worth seeing for Kevin Zegers, not otherwise.

Airplane! (1980)

I'm not sure that this is among the best comedies ever made, as some have claimed; my own best comedies list would feature Jacques Tati's M. Hulot's Holiday, Pierre Étaix's The Suitor and Le Grand amour, Harold Lloyd's The Freshman, For Heaven's Sake and Safety Last!, Buster Keaton's The Cameraman and Sherlock Jr and, go on, Duck Soup and Withnail and I too. But that's a matter of personal taste, and this one is quite special: not exactly sophisticated, but very funny and very sharp.

Akrovates tou kipou (2001)

Greece's entry in the 'child's-eye view of political conflict in the 1970s' line of films. Nicely done.

The film is heavily indebted to Mary Renault's Fire from Heaven and The Persian Boy, and anyone interested would do better to read those.
