Detstvo Gorkogo (1938)

I see this is described as one of the best pre-war Soviet films. I can't argue with that. Eisenstein, with masterpieces like Strike and Alexander Nevsky, was of course the greatest Soviet director of that period -- but he wasn't much given to using boy actors!

The Devil Is a Sissy (1936)

Pretty good film in which, for the only time, three of the greatest boy stars in history appeared together: Freddie Bartholomew at the peak of his career; Mickey Rooney at the start of his; Jackie Cooper on the verge of ageing out of kids' roles.

The Devil's Miner (2005)

Superb, heartbreaking, very important documentary. Mujeres de la mina would make a great companion piece to it.

Les diables (2002)

Remarkable and beautiful (though it does perpetuate the outdated view of autism as a 'childhood psychosis'). The two talented young leads have both gone on to successful adult film careers. Later Vincent Rottiers films that may be of interest include I'm Glad My Mother Is Alive and Chroniques d'une cour de récré; worthwhile later Adèle Haenel films include Water Lilies, Suzanne and the short film Pauline, commissioned and shown on TV as part of a French governmental initiative against homophobia. She also had a supporting role in 120 Beats Per Minute, a fine fictional film which would make a good companion to the documentary How to Survive a Plague -- by contrast, Milk is a softened version of the true story, not a patch on the documentary The Times of Harvey Milk.

Do Bigha Zamin (1953)

Owes a clear debt to The Bicycle Thieves, but can stand on its own as an excellent neorealist piece.

Do Começo ao Fim (2009)

A bit of a rip-off of Agustín Gómez Arcos's novel The Carnivorous Lamb. The first part of the movie, depicting the brothers as children, is charming: the pair, played by Lucas Cotrim and Gabriel Kaufmann, play together, cuddle, and love each other devotedly. The second part is a sweet but static adult love story: lacking the political power of The Carnivorous Lamb, it would probably be quite dull if not for the jolt of the incest factor. Last Summer is a much better film on a somewhat similar theme.
