Choele (2014)

Simple, sunny, realistic, sweet and astute. Lautaro Murray does a great job.

The Choir (1995)

Nice enough, charming kids, lovely singing from Gloucester Cathedral Choir. That the future star chorister just walks in with a great voice isn't realistic -- singing like that takes a lot of training, and Anthony Way's classmate Connor Burrowes was a far better treble in any case. Way, however, had the right look and the screen presence, used to great advantage here.

Les choristes (2004)

Middling pablum but touching in parts and worth seeing for Jean-Baptiste Maunier and the singing of Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc (mixed choir). Maunier turned up again in the 2006 film of Le Grand Meaulnes.

A Christmas Memory (1997)

Not as good as the 1966 version narrated by Capote. Eric Lloyd is a charmer, though.

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey (2007)

Nice acting from Luke Ward-Wilkinson. Sweet if not particularly distinguished film based on the wonderful book of the same name written by Susan Wojciechowski and beautifully illustrated by P. J. Lynch.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)

A well-made, enjoyable movie with delightful young actors. The series has continued with Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Skandar Keynes, who gives an intelligent performance in the most difficult role, is a descendant of Charles Darwin, half a dozen famous academics in the Keynes family, and the founder of the Bahá'í religion!

Chroniques d'une cour de récré (2012)

Portrait of the filmmaker as an eleven-year-old boy. A good autobiographical piece focusing on people and experiences we don't often see in the movies.

Cider with Rosie (1998)

One of the great joys of the book is Laurie Lee's matchless prose, and this version features Lee's voice reading from the book! Worthwhile for that alone, and pretty good as a film, at least as good as the 1971 BBC version.

Cider With Rosie (2015)

Timothy Spall narrates, reading from the book. This adaptation isn't as true to the book as the 1971 and 1998 versions, however.

Il Cielo cade (2000)

Based on Lorenza Mazzetti's autobiographical novel. Also see De Sica's very good The Garden of the Finzi-Continis.

La Classe de neige (1998)

Claude Miller's best film must surely be 1985's marvellous L'effrontée. 2009's I'm Glad My Mother is Alive, which he codirected with his son, Nathan Miller, is too uncritically Freudian but based on a true story and very worthwhile. This one is perhaps excessively odd but it's definitely interesting stuff and it makes good use of Clément van den Bergh's intelligent and brave acting, also displayed in The Fire That Burns.

Clément (2001)

An intelligent and realistic portrayal of how a relationship like this might actually go. The hand-held camera's a bit shaky, but Bercot had to make the film a hand-held camera project in order to get funding for it at all. Olivier Guéritée carries off a demanding role with aplomb and Kevin Goffette also shows considerable talent. Guéritée went on to play secondary roles in the very good adoption-themed I'm Glad My Mother Is Alive and the pleasant, unobjectionable gay-themed Times Have Been Better, then became a production manager.
