Bugsy Malone (1976)

I normally don't care for kids-playing-adults movies but this is surprisingly well done and a fun watch. Sweet Love is better, though.

Bulutlari beklerken (2004)

Interesting but not as good as Yeşim Ustaoğlu's earlier Journey to the Sun.

By Andrew Birkin, an expert on J. M. Barrie who also directed The Cement Garden and wrote the script for The Lost Boys.

The ButterCream Gang (1992)

Determinedly wholesome direct-to-video cornball movie from an LDS company. There are a elements of a potentially good psychological drama here and there in it and it seems to have a bit of a nostalgic following among those who saw it as children.

Bye-Bye (1995)

Well-made and important. Nice performance from Ouassini Embarek. Would make a good companion film to La Haine by Mathieu Kassovitz, A escondidas by Mikel Rueda, Mi Vida Loca by Allison Anders, La ville est tranquille by Robert Guédiguian and Drôle de Félix by Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau.

C'est pas moi, je le jure! (2008)

Really very good in a droll-but-sad, larger-than-life way. It does pale a little in comparison to another dark Québécois school-and-family drama with a ten-year-old male protagonist: the stunning, magnetic The Demons. Nonetheless, the anarchic, morbid lad, played to perfection by Antoine L'Écuyer, is a very winning character.

C.R.A.Z.Y. (2005)

A very good gay-themed coming-of-age tale, definitely up there with Edge of Seventeen if not quite as good as The Man Who Loved Yngve, All Over Me and Giant Little Ones or as original as Stadt Land Fluss and Seashore. Émile Vallée, who appears in the first part of the movie, does a fine job.

Cachorro (2004)

A bit like Breakfast with Scot but better: more thoughtful, plays it less safe. Recommended!

Café com Leite (2007)

Good film that avoids sentimentality and pat, easy resolutions. However, even allowing for its being a short it is somewhat lacking in its treatment of the two brothers' grief over the death of their parents. Carla Simón's Summer of 1993 is a superior feature-length film on a somewhat similar subject. The director here, Daniel Ribeiro, specialises in depicting gay male love among the upper middle class of São Paulo. After winning Berlin's Crystal Bear with this piece, he won the Teddy Award for best gay-themed film with The Way He Looks, a charming if rather slight film depicting a romance between a blind and a sighted boy.

A nostalgic charmer, though improbable and sentimental. The original of Les Choristes.
