Abel (2010)

Original small satire with heart, smarts and excellent acting from Christopher Ruiz-Esparza. Also see the 2017 Polish film Silent Night.

Abner, the Invisible Dog (2013)

Has its enjoyable moments, though Daniel Zykov is not exactly a great acting talent.

Abouna (2002)

Intelligent, funny in spots though also sad, and beautifully shot, with a nice bit of self-reference in the roll-of-film subplot. The technique of cutting off an important scene not at the end of the action, but when we know enough to surmise what the end will be, reminded me of Maurice Pialat (L'Enfance nue). Boy actor fans will notice the poster for Chaplin's The Kid in the cinema! The brothers' closeness is lovely to watch. The director is Mahamat Saleh Haroun, who directed and starred in Chad's first-ever feature film, Bye Bye Africa, in 1999. The only other major Chadian director is Issa Serge Coelo, who has made Daresalam and DP75: Tartina City, both very good. Good later films by Haroun include Daratt, A Screaming Man, A Season in France and the TV movie Sex, Okra and Salted Butter.

About a Boy (2002)

One of the various Hugh Grant vehicles; Four Weddings and a Funeral is pretty good and the rest are pretty bad, except for this one: it's an interesting departure though it pales a bit in comparison to really good odd-couple buddy movies such as Alice in the Cities, Stud Life, Young Soul Rebels and Blindspotting. Nicholas Hoult turns in an excellent performance. The friendship between his character and Grant's is the central relationship in the movie, and it's nicely portrayed, with the two actors working very well together.

Abuse (1982)

Based on a true story from the director's own life. Like Der Kreis, Nighthawks and A Very Natural Thing, it's a snapshot of homosexual life at a particular point in the twentieth century, and like Un chant d'amour and We Were One Man, it's a very original gay-themed film, a one-off.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

It's a cult classic but I didn't care for it. For something in this line, but much better and genuinely hilarious, see the 1978 film La cage aux folles.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938)

Tom Sawyer is hard to adapt for the screen because Twain's humorous running commentary is half the point of the book, but this film is very enjoyable and surely the best screen version ever made.

Grim, excellent film by Radu Jude, director of the remarkable Everybody In Our Family. Based on real events, dialogue largely from primary sources.
