Wonder (2017)

Big-hearted and polished but there's a sheen of unreality over the surface of the proceedings. The ten-year-olds' behaviour and dialogue doesn't quite convince as natural, and as has been pointed out by people living with facial differences, the film dodges some major questions, such as: what if Auggie's parents hadn't been able to pay for his surgeries so easily? what about when he's a bit older and interested in girls/boys/both? and so on.

Wow and Flutter (2004)

Excellent, moving and quite original portrayal of what it's like to be a teenager experiencing a passion for music and a first, unrequited love. Good editing and lighting, well-structured story, intelligent use of music, and nice natural acting from Ethan Moskowitz, who was the last boy to read for the part of David.

Wuthering Heights (1939)

Not up to much as an adaptation of the book, but as a film, very good.

Yaaba (1991)

Lovely film, though not as good as I Am Not a Witch by Zambian-Welsh director Rungano Nyoni. Also, S. Pierre Yameogo's Delwende is a more fleshed-out treatment of witchcraft accusations in Burkina Faso. Other good Yameogo films include Laafi, tout va bien; Wendemi, the Good Lord's Child; Bayiri, la patrie; Silmandé; and the comedy Me and My White Pal. Other good films set in Burkina Faso include Wallay and Moolaadé.

Yanco (1961)

Beautiful fable that could easily have been corny but manages not to be. As with Henri Decaë's cinematography for the wonderful Sundays and Cybèle, there's a lot of visual inventiveness, with things seen from different angles, in reflection and so on. The plot is based on Henryk Sienkiewicz's story Yanko the Musician. The dialogue, of which there's very little, is mostly in Náhuatl.

The Yankee Clipper (1927)

Fun film! A rip-roaring adventure with great production values and a lively, charming performance from Junior Coghlan.

The Yarn Princess (1994)

Lifetime movie, surprisingly not bad despite a lapse into courtroom histrionics and a lack of subtlety in handling the rich-poor divide. Karl David-Djerf stands out in a nicely judged performance as Jimmy and seems like he could have handled a better script. I wonder why we didn't get to see him in more movies.
