Shu jia zuo ye (2013)

Wonderful little film that would make a great companion to Chen Kunhou's Growing Up.

Den Sidste Viking (1997)

Iceland's Outlaw: The Saga of Gisli is a careful and broadly very faithful and accurate film adaptation of one of the Icelandic sagas. This takes more imaginative license but it's no lighthearted adventure, rather a dark, grim, very well-made coming-of-age tale.

El silencio de Neto (1994)

Not as adroit as it might be at handling its various plot threads, but as the first Guatemalan film with international reach deserves respect and arguably laid some of the the groundwork for Jayro Bustamante's superb trilogy Ixcanul, Temblores and La Llorona.

Simon sagt 'Auf Wiedersehen' zu seiner Vorhaut (2015)

Viviane Andereggen, who grew up in Hungary and Switzerland and studied film with Wim Wenders, presents the story of a Liberal/Reform/Progressive Jewish lad living in Hamburg. Fast-paced, warm, funny and assured. Would make a good dual watch with Inxeba.

Sipur Hatzi-Russi (2006)

Yep, like an Israeli Billy Elliot, with added love story. Vladimir Volov does a fine job. I did watch this in a Spanish dub (El Primer Baile) and it's likely something was lost in the dubbing. Certainly the switching between Hebrew and Russian was lost.

The Six Dollar Fifty Man (2009)

Very good indeed, maybe the best short film starring a boy actor I have seen. Works on several levels -- there's a touch of magical realism here, for instance. One scene, in which the boy burns the hand of his Six Million Dollar Man action figure and drops the melting plastic on some hapless woodlice, reminded me of a scene in Tony Duvert's novel When Jonathan Died in which another eight-year-old boy similarly plays about with fire and hapless worms. This film has in common with Duvert's novel a remarkably accurate, clear-eyed view of childhood.

Skaterdater (1965)

A sweet tale of growing up, quite innovative for its time, and now a special historical document that immortalises a group of remarkable young athletes.
