Il sapore del grano (1986)

A bit clunky in spots but nicely done overall. Unusual, interesting and important in that it treats the growing closeness between the boy and the young man not in isolation, but in the context of the man's involvement -- mainly friendly and affectionate, sometimes hostile, sometimes ambivalent -- with all the members of the boy's family.

More of an interesting curiosity than a really good film but interesting it is.

Seachd: The Inaccessible Pinnacle (2007)

A solid film with a nice lead performance by Pàdruig Moireasdan/Patrick Morrison. Almost every word of dialogue is in Scottish Gaelic, an endangered regional language which efforts are being made to preserve. This is the first film in the language to have obtained mainstream distribution. The grandfather is played by Aonghas Phàdraig Caimbeul/Angus Peter Campbell, a distinguished poet and novelist who writes mainly in Scottish Gaelic and also in English. This film isn't quite up to Poitín, the first feature film made entirely in Irish, but it's a very worthy effort.

Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993)

Formulaic but very well-executed. Would make a good dual watch with Akeelah and the Bee. This movie is apparently not very accurate about tournament chess, and the best fictional chess movie ever made must surely remain the 1925 Russian short comedy Chess Fever. However, Max Pomeranc's lead performance is such a treat to watch that it's hard to care about anything else!

Second Best (1994)

Adam, B for Boy, the short film Kinderspiel and Márta Mészáros' Adoption are surely the best, most honest adoption-related films ever made, but this is well worth a look too.

The Secret Garden (1993)

Pretty good, despite the addition of a romance between Mary and Dickon that skips merrily over the class taboos of the time. Kate Maberly is the standout for me here.
