The Spanish Gardener (1956)

OK but the book is better, as is Hunted, which also stars Dirk Bogarde and Jon Whiteley together.

A Special Gift (1979)

Well before Billy Elliot, there was this quite thoughtful afterschool special, which certainly made a nice change from the preachiness of many others. Stephen Austin was clearly chosen more for his dancing than for his acting ability, and indeed the acting is quite ropey all around, but hey, it's an afterschool special. Ike Eisenmann crops up playing, of all things, a bully jock, and his younger brother Al plays the protagonist's best friend.

Stand by Me (1986)

This film is dear to the hearts of many and I can see why. It's hard to go far wrong with River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton and a story of boyhood friendships and adventures and of nostalgia for times past. That said, a few things about it rang false to me. For instance, River Phoenix's character is implausibly emotionally mature for a twelve-year-old, and like clockwork, three of the main four have a crisis and break down crying, then are consoled -- except for the fat kid, who's just there for comic relief. I thought Killa/The Fort did a much better job of depicting the bonding and fun of a group of boys this age, and the Argentinian short film Raw Love did a much better job with the themes of deep friendship, unspoken love and the losses of growing up. Mind you, I didn't much care for Reiner's hugely popular The Princess Bride either, so maybe I'm loopy!

Stand Clear of the Closing Doors (2013)

Wow, what a movie! Piercingly realistic, knocks The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time into a cocked hat. Would make a good companion film to Mosquita y Mari, Raising Victor Vargas, On the Outs and Real Women Have Curves. Jesus Sanchez-Velez, the fine actor playing the thirteen-year-old autistic protagonist, is autistic himself.
