The Snowman (1982)

Aled Jones made 'Walking in the Air' famous, but Peter Auty of St Paul's Cathedral was the lad who first sang it. Before his soprano days ended he made some recordings, later released on CD as Down the River of Years. He's now an operatic tenor.

Bobby Driscoll and a pet lamb! I was won over at once. The film combines live action with animated sequences.

Song for a Raggy Boy (2003)

Affecting but a bit pat. Good to see Andrew Simpson, who appeared in Notes on a Scandal two years later.

Song of the South (1946)

The Br'er Rabbit character here is one of the best things Disney ever did. Objections to this film's sanitised portrayal of singing, wide-smiling black people who are just delighted to work for white people are not new. The National Negro Congress picketed cinemas where it was played on its first release, and a Jewish newspaper commented that it added to Walt Disney's reputation as "an arch-reactionary". Norma Jensen of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People thought that it contained "all the clichés in the book" but was "so artistically beautiful that it is difficult to be provoked over the clichés" and years later it is difficult to disagree with her assessment, and also difficult to understand why Disney has been at such pains to pretend this film never existed but so sanguine over the 'What Made the Red Man Red?' song in 1953's Peter Pan.

Sorrell and Son (1984)

Handsome and involving slow sentimental epic from the pre-Internet days when attention spans were longer! Paul Critchley, who plays Kit Sorrell at thirteen, appears only in the first two episodes and his portrayal is mostly on one note of wide-eyed earnestness, but that's not his fault, it's baked into the material. Warwick Deeping was a doctor and writer, a best-seller in his day who earned several scathing mentions in Orwell's essays. The book on which this is based draws on his medical experience and deals with the then-hot controversial topic of euthanasia.
